saadasound
Looking to buy a shotgun mic to go well with my MKH 50. I've been told to just stick to Sennheiser and get a 60, but I wanted to keep my options open. Anyone recommend anything? Sanken CS3e? CMIT5U? Thanks Steve
Max Hirtenstein
I've got a 416. Cuts well together in my opinion.
Brent Lestage
I also used the 416 with 50 (preferred the 416 over the 60), but now use the CMIT-5U with 50. Could probably just get away with the CMIT for most of the work I do, but I like the slightly wider pattern and fullness of the 50 for sit-down interviews. RPSharman
50 and 60 do not match at all! 416 is good if you give it its required breathing room. CMIT too. But in my opinion, everyone should have a 416 in the kit. So start there.
saadasound
I have a 416 already, which is great, but I wanted to get something to match the warmth of the 50 a little more.

If you're not finding your 416 warm enough, then have it checked out, or try a different booming technique with it. It's a pretty warm mic. Mirror
I never thought the 416 to be a warm mic. The 60 sucks, doesn't match anything. The KMR81 is a pretty good match for the 50 though.
ncg
8060 with a tacit and the 50 play well together.
Marc Wielage
I'm the only guy who likes the MKH60! But I don't use it at the same time I do the 50. I usually reach for the 60 (or even the seldom-used 70) outdoors, and the 50 or the 40 indoors. I often keep the 416 and sometimes the 816 on the truck as backups, but they haven't come out much in the last few years.
Jon Gilbert
I prefer my 60 to my 416, always have. Don't use either of them that often though, the CS3e comes out first, but the 60 will always have a place in the Peli.
Toy Robot
I love my MKH-60. But I also still love the 416. I think the 416 will be in my kit forever, as many here have noted.
studiomprd
" I wanted to keep my options open. " OMG... too bad we never have discussed this... once you buy one, your options remain open: you can buy something else later, and even sell what you started with... heck in this case you could even sell your 50 and go Schoeps. you have, and will continue to have lots of options... as to which short shotgun you choose, or which options you exercise, that will be your personal, and frankly subjective choice. call me jaded, but the various candidates are continually discussed here, and barring a major new product introduction, not mich has changed in the last 2 years since Steve has been around here regularly..... BTW, "cuts well with..." As I recently typed, and as a practical matter, very few folks will even be able to tell the difference
Ramsay
I'm thinking of revisiting the MKH 50 as an indoor mic. We often need an elbow in tight situations. Is the 8050 with elbow a good match to the MkH 50? Specs look similar.

Eric Toline
I'm thinking of revisiting the MKH 50 as an indoor mic. We often need an elbow in tight situations. Is the 8050 with elbow a good match to the MkH 50? Specs look similar. I've tried both together as a test. The 8050 is a little more bass prone and the hp filter does not sound the same as the one in the MKH 50. OTOH with a little judicious HP adjustment on your mixer, you can get them close enough for government work or rock & roll. Eric
Ramsay
Thanks Eric, I'm always tweaking the top and bottom a couple DB's anyway between mics, so I'll give 'em a try.
Armin Siegwarth
As you have two Sennheiser Mics that are quite in the same direction (presence boost) - why not get something a bit different. I'd take a CMIT cause its more gentle for example for sharp female voices. Its expensive - but maybe you will use it more often than you think right now cause its so nice. BTW: A Neuman KMR81 is to my ears totally different to an MKH 50. Much softer highs, more gentle dynamics.
Eric Toline
+1 on KMR 81 & MKH 50 Eric
hobosoundguy
The 70 outdoors and a pair of 50 indoors were always magic. I find the cmit a completely different monster. It's a great Everyman mic but if I had time and choices of mics I'd go with a 70 416 and 50.
Constantin
Just for the fun of it, I would like to suggest the DPA 4017B. It's capable of handling very high SPLs, much more so than almost any mic I've heard. I don't know how well it cuts with the MKH50, to be honest, but it is pretty warm mic. At least what I consider to be warm. But I wouldn't call a 416 warm. The big advantage of the 4017 is that it cuts very well with the DPA lavs, especially the 4061, in my opinion. Arguably, matching mics within a scene is far more important than matching indoor/outdoor mics
shaneconnelly
I have been using the DPA 4017 for a while with the mighty MKH 50 and find them to be quite complimentary. The sanken is not very close at all and the MKH 60, although nice, is not as good a match as the 4017, IMO.
larry long
I use 50's when I can get in there close but primarily the Sanken cs3e's. It's my perception of perspective. Larry
Reuben Colazo
I currently use a 416, from what I've seen and read around here the mkh50 is the next step for my kit. I just upgraded my main kit to the maxx so from here on out its all mics and eventually upgrading g3s when I can get work that will pay for them! benr
416 is what I was going to suggest as well. Thats what I pair with the 50.
