Alas, the beginning of the end, I love Jeff, but he won't be able to do this forever. This site has influence over probably 90% of our market, why not cash in on it to provide for some of his family etc. I would definitely do it.

I'm personally not a fan. While I completely understand the need to generate some revenue for the time you put into this site, I, myself,  feel the donations (or even a subscription) would be the better approach.

I think my hangup is this: The vendors and manufacturers whom are more secure both in reputation, and  financially, now have a further upper-hand.

I just wouldn't want this to be the beginning of the de-democratization of the site. With dealer/manufacturer financial interests at stake, I worry that some may feel less inclined to share their true feelings about a particular vendor or manufacturer's piece of gear. I may be over thinking this, but I wonder if it also becomes a fish-in-a-barrel type scenario of buying out the opinion of a captive audience.

However it all shakes out, I respect that it is your site to do with as you please... And thank you for hosting all of us as the guests who refuse to go home.

Best,

Wyatt

As long as Subway don't put one up ; )

Good one.

Hey Wyatt, I understand your concern but the democracy and exchange of thoughts, stories, POV's,  et all...,  is up to us to continue and keep true. I think most of the vendors and shops are on our side because it is their side as well. Time will tell.

I'm totally for it. I know that Jeff has expenses, and I don't mind seeing a small banner ad, especially when it's something that's expressly directed to our industry.

I'd have a different reaction if there were pop-ups, ads for cigarettes, gambling websites, porno, and all the other crap that leaches on to the net. But the site deserves to make its own income to help pay for bandwidth, upkeep, backups, and so on.

I feel that my local vendors are like my extended family. I support them and they support me. It's not like they are "big box" companies.

Good one.

I don't think anyone holds back on their thoughts about vendors and manufacturers. Most of them read this anyway so it's no different in that respect.

I've said this before, they ( the vendors and manufacturers) need us as much as we need them. They don't (or shouldn't ) want to alienate us in any way so pop ups etc should not plague this site.

Speaking for myself, the banners will not influence a purchase I would make. For example, I prefer Sound Devices recorders, I highly doubt seeing a Maxx banner will ever make me buy a Maxx. That's just me though. I guess some people might be affected subliminally, who knows?

I do however like that I can keep up with the latest gear by seeing a banner about whats available.

We don't have alot of choice here in Australia when it comes to "usual suspects" so that makes no difference to influential sales. I guess in the US, there could be alot of competition but all's fair in love and war. As long as the banners are from our pro dealers, it's fine.

Cheers

Mega

Forgive me Wyatt if I have failed to understand exactly what you are saying. I really don't see how the presence of ads from the usual suspects (vendors, manufacturers) has any bearing on the discussions here on JWSOUND. With the purchase of ad space the companies putting up advertising have not been granted any special rights or moderation permission, nothing on the site has changed in this regard.

"The vendors and manufacturers whom are more secure both in reputation, and  financially, now have a further upper-hand." --- what is this "upper hand" that you claim I have given them?

"With dealer/manufacturer financial interests at stake, I worry that some may feel less inclined to share their true feelings about a particular vendor or manufacturer's piece of gear." If I'm reading this correctly, whose "financial interests" are we talking about? There is already the prevalent phenomenon we have all experienced where an individual may defend the specific product they are using because of their financial stake in that equipment or company. Manufacturers and Dealers have already been using JWSOUND to promote and advertise (for FREE in the Manufacturers & Dealers section) and this has not de-democratized the site or muzzled any of our members commenting on the products we use. I just felt it was time to compel the manufacturers and dealers to pay a little something to be able to advertise to our community on this site.

"I may be over thinking this, but I wonder if it also becomes a fish-in-a-barrel type scenario of buying out the opinion of a captive audience." I don't think there is anyone on this site whose opinions can be so easily bought and formal paid for advertising isn't going to change that.
