Meon LiFe Update Available

Recommended Posts

Remote Audio is now offering an update for all Meon LiFe units manufactured before April 15, 2013.  The update ensures reliable switching to/from battery power in the event of a brown out or similar AC power irregularity.  The update is also beneficial in certain circumstances when the Meon LiFe is used in conjunction with a gas powered generator or power conditioning device (e.g. Furman).

Parts and installation will be free of charge.  Customers will be responsible for all shipping charges. Service will be performed at Remote Audio’s main office in Nashville, TN. Customers in the Los Angeles, CA area may alternatively bring their unit to Trew Audio’s LA location, an authorized Remote Audio service center.

If you are interested in getting the update, please contact our main office first for a Return Authorization number and further information. You can contact us at 615-256-3513 or info@remoteaudio.com. Please have your unit’s serial number ready when you contact us.

Thank you.

I want to thank Phil Schullo from Remote Audio for his proper use of the Manufacturers & Dealers section on JWSOUND. This notification of an update for one of Remote Audio's products is the perfect use of this section. Using this section for FREE ADVERTISING is not appropriate for any of our usual suspects.

Thank you Phil for setting the good example for everyone else.

i heard through the grapevine that Glen will be updating any Meon LiFe's brought to the Atlanta Sound Mixer Sunday on June 9th!

Correction: Sounds like Glen will be doing the upgrades Saturday and/or Monday here in Atlanta. I'll let him fill in the details. Thanks Glen!

I'll attempt to explain in detail why this upgrade circuit was made:

There were rare reports of the Meon LiFe turning off when a production's generator's engine failed (such as when running out of fuel) instead of switching to battery power, as was mentioned on this group a few months ago. There was also a more rare condition that occurred when quickly disconnecting reconnecting AC when -- and only when -- a Furman power conditioner was being used. Some models of Furman power conditioner turn on in steps, and while the first step was high enough to switch to AC power, it wasn't high enough to produce the minimum DC voltage. As it turns out, the fix was the same for both causes.

It was a real mind puzzle because it was very difficult to reproduce at will. Also the Meon v2 never had this issue, even though the switching circuit of the two devices is identical. Identical, that is, except for an additional low voltage cut-off circuit designed to prevent an external battery from deep discharge (below 10V). Solving this issue by removing this secondary low-voltage cutoff circuit was considered (and would have solved the problem) because the Meon Extra LiFe battery module has it's own protection circuit. But since some people are using it with homemade external battery packs, it was decided to keep it and offer the upgrade.

All Meon LiFe power supplies now include this new circuit.

Regards,

Glen Trew
