I think Spielberg is 50% right here.. I believe the big 7 will make less films.. But the audience won't put up with that.. they will clamor for more content, leaving the gate wide open for more smaller independents to fill those gaps.  Just my take.

The studios have been making fewer and fewer films for years. I can remember in the early 1990s, Disney released as many as 35 films a year (!!!), which is incredible -- albeit through different entities (Walt Disney Productions, Touchstone, animation, and made-for-TV). Not anymore.

As long as there's a market for smaller films made for cable -- even Netflix and Amazon -- there will hopefully be a market for crews and filmmakers. My fear is what this will ultimately do to the pay structure for projects like this.

I honestly prefer less movies to be made. It reminds me of the 80's when that "one blockbuster" was something us kids would talk about all school year. Now, there's so much content that nothing stands out anymore. I forget about movies two days after watching them.

Gone are the days of everyone reciting:

"who you gonna call"

"I'll be back"

"go ahead, make my day"

"they're hee-eere!"

"E.T phone home"

"wax on, wax off"

"one point twenty one gigawatts!"

"I know you are but what am I"

I'm all about more quality and less quantity when it comes to films. We can leave it to Television to continue barfing out content.

I think the big future is the quality cable TV shows being made. A sentiment echoed at the Q&A of Downton Abbey this week, by the writer. Who said he never imagined himself doing TV, but he loves it. Because of the freedom. It's more hands off.

I'm not at all scored about the, mostly, horribly made films done on Netflix and Amazon. Poorly written, poorly acted, Poorly shot, out of focus movies, by "Directors" who are the writers and lead actor.
