Hello All,

My name is Erick, i recently opened a profile with this forum, and I would like some comments and recommendation. I am interested in buying some sound for film gear for Documentaries and films. I was hoping to get some more information on which product, brand, and model to buy and why? Thank you all in advance for helping.

Erick

Entitlement generation anyone?

"I don't really want to do any of the work, just give me the answer to my question".

If Jwsoundgroup.net existed when I started out, I would've spent hours upon hours, days on end devouring the wealth of information so generously offered for free by some very knowledgeable folks.

But that would be work.

Exactly my thoughts André and that is what ive been doing for the last 6 months: searching for tips and tricks. There is no shortcut to gaining experience faster but this is as close as it gets. It is so awesome to have this forum :)

Thank you all for all your contributions...

Franky

When I joined I must have spent a good nine months reading this forum every day before I ever posted a thing, and any question I ask are usually base on people's opinions, so something not found in a manual or easily searchable. I think it is a logical process, I don't understand why with such a wealth if information available to everyone that they just ask how to do their job and make decisions for them. The Facebook groups are all like that it is amazing how many people defend it and are ok with donating their experience and research to people who don't want to work for their knowledge, especially when just reading forums or doing simple Internet searches are all the work you really need to do.

That's very funky!

A lot of it boils down more to technique than just equipment per se. I'd start off by reading the books discussed in these previous threads:

There's also a good bibliography at this link:

http://www.filmsound.org/bibliography/littlist.htm

I would also visit a store specializing in pro sound gear to get their advice, and I would consider renting gear and buying used gear if you're just starting off. TAI Audio in Orlando should be within a few hours of your location in Florida, and they're pretty well-regarded.

That facebook group has been driving me nuts.  I can't believe some of the worst culprits actually manage to get hired...There are lots of really great folks posting really great inspiring and interesting stuff too, but it is very hard not to get annoyed some of the ridiculous questions that could be answered in 30 seconds of looking at a website or manual.

The fact that some defend it or are more tolerant probably speaks more to their good nature than anything else, but I certainly don't think it's beneficial to anyone in the long term...especially the OP's themselves, who sound like they need a good kick up the arse more than anything else and will only succeed in running their own reputations into the ground.

With regards to the OP, as Marc very wisely pointed out, visit a location sound specialist, they will give you the best options within your budget and talk you through the whole thing.  You might also want to rent for the time being and get to know the equipment a little better before buying.  There are also literally a trillion discussions contained within this resource regarding starter kits - check them out.

If you're just starting out, do your own research as much as you can, read a book, search this forum, search the internet etc.  A lot of work, in my experience, comes to me from other mixers, who broadly speaking will not respect you or trust you to cover for them if you would rather ask before even attempting to figure something out for yourself.

Good luck!

I too think it took about the nine month mark before I contributed. Although I read, researched all your minds to the point that my wife and I now call this my SOUND PORN. The first question I asked, Mr Senator shot me down. I flushed purple, shamed by my peers, I was to embarrassed to to squeak for a while. Oh by the way I already new the answer, just forgot, got on the wrong train of thought, some good people here redirected me.

My point, there is a lot of amazing knowledge here but please have an informed idea of the question you want to ask, and the group will be able to honestly help.

Reminds me of the Chinese tale of the man who was hungry, so he stood on a hill with his mouth open expecting a roast duck to fly in.

The point is, this site is an INCREDIBLE resource for sound recordists, and you could spend months reading about different gear and techniques here. Also plenty of opinion and advice about how to conduct oneself in this business.

By and large everybody is helpful and willing to answer the right questions and give their opinion.

But you have to lift a finger. Or as funkyblunts found out, you'll get The Finger.
