Christian Spaeth
Chiming in late on this one but I do agree with Andrej that you can "feel" when a tune was done live. We had this heated discussion on the Blogotheque thread about exactly that thing. I guess it's a musicians thing, that you can just feel when it's live. The directness and honesty, call it the moment, is something that you cannot repeat over and over. Technically a lot is possible, but this specifically isn't just about technique, but about feeling. By the way the same applies to ADR I believe. If you have an ear (and the feeling) for it, you can tell if the actor really just said those words in that shot or if they were done afterwards, even if the ADR was done as good as it gets. As for mic placement and invisibility in said videos, I can only repeat myself in that musicians can work wonders in dynamics that you wouldn't imagine if you're used to mainly recording spoken voices. So a well played in band in a good sounding room can balance themselves out so well that you don't need to worry all that much about where exactly your mic(s) are placed.
