DIY Zaxpaq

Being inspired from the beautiful works of Pascal and others of you on their wireless custom setup in bags, here it is my attempt to make a sort of Zaxpaq that could fit better my needs.

I thought to make it myself because I'd want to have it the same size of my Fusion recorder, in order to have a more compact setup, where the original Zaxpaq (even the 3 bay one, for what i know) seems to be a little longer than the Fusion width.

So, now that I've bought the Micplexer too, I assembled this case, made out of allunimun panels and some L and T alluminum bars with some rubber protections.

The receivers can be easily slide on and off from the front side and there's space in the back side for cables and connections. At this moment, the only cables that comes out are the AES output cable and the timecode one.

So it needs only to be connected the power cable and aerials.

Actually, I was a little worried if this could create some sort of rf problems at the receivers but, making some tests, it seems to not change the reception preformance. Anyway, I've noticed that the QRX receive a little more rf garbage if located very near to the Fusion, even without my diy case.

It fits perfectly in my PS602 petrol bag and, being slightly less tall than a rack unit, it's easily to mount/ unmount on/from my cart too paired with the Fusion.

Below are some pictures (sorry for the phone quality).

ps. to make pictures, I placed the antenna in the wrong connector :(

On my current project, the two QIFB in my bag which are half outside the bag, the other four in my zax-paq,they never locked up during HOT weather, I'm not talking about "warm" or "very warm".

There is one more QIFB which I'm using receive UHF audio from my Maxx then re-broadcast it through QIFB as a 2nd IFB transmitter to extend IFB range, I put this unit in a pouch which is quite tight&isolated from air,in the rain I put plastic bag outside of it as well. This unit locked up two or three times, by " lock up", I mean : any touch of any of the buttons on the panel is NOT working. So you can't make any change of it. The unit still receiving and broadcast IFB audio fine. The only way to power it off is un-plug the external power of it then re-boot it everything back fine. And yes latest firmware if that's your next question Jack.

I'm suggesting Vale drill some holes on his DIY case so the unit can breath in case it gets too hot then lose the control of the unit during a take which might happen.

You really don't have to defend every single negative info of a certain brand, every product(include other brands) has its weak point on various conditions. That's why we share our experience and opinions here.

Cloud, thanks for sharing. So even when you've experienced the lock up the QRX still receives and outputs good audio? That's cool.

Also, I've been thinking of trying the same dual IFB voting mode for better IFB range. Does this provide you enough range so you can successfully use the ERX for director IFB? Or are you just using as timecode and scratch tack transmission for camera only?

Thanks!

Derek
