Zaxcom TRX900CL Review

 

I have used camera links for more than twenty years. My main link for most of that time was a set of vhf - yes- vhf Audio Limiteds.  They worked faithfully except for a handful of times when competing frequencies were in the area. They occasionally needed to be sent in for retuning, which was expensive and inconvenient.  Over the last couple of years though, as if finally aging too much, they began to become more and more unreliable. Finally, one of them died and needed to be sent in for repair. I decided it was time to get a new set of links for my kit. I found a two used Zaxcom receivers and a transmitter and purchased them. The receivers worked perfectly, even though they were older, but the transmitter needed to be replaced. A friend told me he had just purchased the Zaxcom TRX900CL and that it made a huge difference. After hearing that, I made up my mind.

I thought it would be a long process to order it and wait for it to come in, but they had it in stock at Gotham Sound in NY. I picked it after a job, and ran a few tests at home. I love the fact that you can set the output power to 10, 50, or 100 milliwatts.  Of course I set it to 100. The next day I was working in a correspondent’s apt. where a decorating crew was professionally putting up Christmas decorations with the emphasis on how to decorate the tree. I miced the corresponded and the guest and then used the Zaxcom TRX900CL to send it to the camera.

The mixer sat on a couch all day - love that, ha ha--  Subjects to mixer - mixer to camera - all wireless.

 

Of course, it worked perfectly. Every time I had a chance, I’d walk over to the camera and check that the sound was clear. It sounded so good, it was like I was going straight to camera with the wireless mics. By the time the afternoon had rolled around, I was so comfortable and confident in the clear transmission of the wireless, that I merely had to put on my headset once in a while just to remind myself how well it was working. And yes, it was better than my old wireless link. Not even the slightest hiss or electronic noise of any kind. It will also record a backup file with timecode on a mini-sd card, send the audio via ifb on a second antenna, or make coffee, ha ha. It has so many additional features that it’s more like a little broadcast center in your bag. The form factor is simply wonderful too. A nice flat square which fits wonderfully anywhere in ones bag. It’s great that the connections are underneath so everything remains nice and clean. I’ve used it for about two weeks, and I feel wonderfully confident again. I couldn’t be happier with my new TRX900CL transmitter.

sorry, but, IMO, that is not the way a working professional earns their day rate.

Head between the cans, and hand poised on the controls, carefully listening, watching and as needed, tweaking-adjusting.

I read it that by the afternoon he was comfortable enough that he put his headphones in the camera "once in a while" so he can remind himself that it was working so well.
