Box Rental vs Package Rental

Just coming across this thread now - finding it very informative and wondering if the prevailing wisdom here has changed at all.

 

Common payroll and project management portals like Wrapbook and GreenSlate seem to like the Kit/Box Fee terminology. I have always itemized and invoiced out my gear as "Audio Equipment Rental Package".

 

I wasn't aware of the possibility of a COI not being enforceable.

I’m in the process of filling out rental paperwork with a network right now and while their agreement form is titled “box rental” the fine print does indicate that my gear will be covered by the production’s insurance. I have a few issues with the wording such as some language about “wear and tear” being not their responsibility. I’ve had that become an issue before especially with slates. 
 

I do agree with the sentiment earlier in this thread about feeling comfortable that the producers/UPM of a show will approve the small L&D’s but if there ever was a major loss it would get kicked up the food chain where middle managers you’ve never met would hide behind the paperwork and take whatever interpretation is best for the bottom line. That seems pretty accurate to me.

Just filled out paperwork for a single day of EPK that has the box rental language.  I'm not going to fight it for one day, but it's certainly something I'm watching for.

It also says in several places that they require me to carry my own insurance.  Not sure if this is a new clause in the decade since this thread started, but I haven't seen that before.

On a tangent, are you guys being taxed on this rental, whatever the nomenclature used?

Not sure if it's relevant to you since I'm in Canada, but I have to charge GST on my rentals.  That's not really me being taxed, but it does add to the amount on my bill and then I remit it to the government.

Beyond that, eventually my rental income ends up as part of my business income and I get taxed on that, but I don't pay any specific taxes beyond the usual on my rental income.
