Soldering a TA5 to 3.5mm adapter cable

Hi All,

 

I need get a custom cable made to adapt the TA5f return plug of my Nomad umbilical to the unbalanced  3.5mm return input of other mixers such as 552 etc.

 

The Nomad return input pin out is as follows.

 

 

Pin 1 - Ground

Pin 2 - Channel A (Left) ( + ) 

Pin 3 - Channel A (Left) ( - ) 

Pin 4 - Channel B (Right) ( + ) 

Pin 5 - Channel B (Right) ( - ) 

 

Is it fine for me to leave 2 of the pins on the adapter cable's TA5 male not connected?

Like this:

 

TA5m Pin1 _ Gnd _ Sleeve

TA5m Pin2 _ A(+) _ Tip

TA5m Pin3 _ nc

TA5m Pin4 _ B(+) _ Ring

TA5m Pin5 _ nc

I would personaly tie pins 3 and 5 to the ground.

Would you recommend tying those to ground within the TA5, to facilitate using a cable with less cores?

Run a jumper to pins 1, 3 & 5 in the TA 5 to complete the unbalanced circuit.

Yep - just like Eric said. Small wire jumper in the shell of the ta5 will work fine.

Another option would be to divide the braided shield into 3 strands, and attach 1 to each of the three gnd pins. I've resorted to this approach lately, as I find the individual tinned strands add a bit of rigidity. It's also a bit easier (and I feel safer) than crossing adjacent hot pins.

Of course, why didn't I ever think of that. The Tuzo jump method will now become my standard protocol for "pin jumping" Thank you Wyatt.
