LarryF
Here's a "walk" test using Gordon's Mini with the DB transmitter on the roof with a right angle whip. For some reason the sales department had one right angle whip on the DRM receiver module with an LPDA on the other antenna port. So this literally was a diversity system with 1.5 LPDA's or 2.5 whip antennas attached. Also, they used a transmitter frequency that had a high noise floor from local TV stations. So in one sense this was just the sales crew goofing around. The fact that there was an ex-engineer there, lends no credibility to the test. http://youtu.be/lFTqL8dUD9U Best, Larry F Lectro

Malcolm Davies Amps CAS
I'm gonna' need 2 miles on my new show.... --sent from one of my personal computing devices, using a web browsing program can you tell which ones..? That's nothing Mike. I've got to get up at 3-30 drive 500 miles to location, set up 124 radio mics get a 4.25 mile range on all channels before I get my first coffee!! deep owl
Amazing! That garbage truck at 8:37 gave you some trouble it sounds like. Stupid giant metal vehicle! So cool to see this vast increase in range as well as wideband receiving on all this new stuff!

So cool to see this vast increase in range as well as wideband receiving on all this new stuff! Hi D, That was a little strange. We are guessing really severe multipath from those large flat surfaces but I would have expected as much from the cars and stuff Gordon passed at much greater distances. The other possibility is all the TV towers that are on the Crest straight behind us. There was quite a bit of noise floor and I wonder if some of that was being reflected at us from those same flat surfaces. Oh well, I wish I understood this RF stuff. Derek Mansvelt
So I wonder how far you could actually get with line of sight and no cars or large metal trucks?

LarryF
So I wonder how far you could actually get with line of sight and no cars or large metal trucks? Hi Derek, We have been discussing the same thing. So we are going to try a setup with matched antennas, with a stationary subject (not on a car moving 50 MPH), on a clear channel, away from the road and with real live engineers. Not that we engineers have anything against salesmen. Of course, this would be so optimized that it wouldn't mean anything in the real world. But then we could make all kinds of fantastic distance claims. Actually, now that I think about it, all we need is salesmen for that. RScottATL
Larry, great job! So glad to see more film & tv players in the digital world. Can't wait for the bag receivers to make a complete lineup of digital Lectrosonics systems. Just got in a Zaxcom unit (no offense!) and have to say regardless of brand, digital is simply the way of the future to do audio in the RF jungle we live and work in. Love the RF software too! Can't wait to try it all out. Kudos to you and your team. Looks like you have a winner on your hands.
Derek H
Is that hiss from the beachtek or a non servo lav? Just kidding. Fun video. Hoping this tech makes its way to our little corner sooner than later!
karlw
Is that hiss from the beachtek or a non servo lav? Just kidding. Fun video. Hoping this tech makes its way to our little corner sooner than later! Derek - the hiss in the audio is entirely my fault - it's a gain structure issue. I got confused about the inputs and outputs on the Beachtek and I think I had "mic in" selected on the outputs when it should have been "line in" and then I cranked the gain on the Beachtek inputs to get a decent level on the camera meters. Then the audio was boosted by Gordon in post... For the next one, we're going to test everything beforehand. That's what you get when a couple of salesmen try to do camerawork! Philip Perkins
That was a really good real world test--very interesting. Not perfectly engineered, but most location sound never is (esp anything shot in moving cars), so it's a good example of a setup quickly scrambled together. I'd call it a success. philp
JonO
Larry, So in general, is the new digital system getting significantly better range than the digital hybrids despite having a lower output power? It would seem this test suggests that. -Jon
