Jay Rose
Most modern dynamics are perfectly happy feeding the middle impedance of a computer without a transformer. I've done it frequently using a simple XLR-to-mini. There are two issues that the transformer can help with: 1) Gain. This is iffy. Many dynamics are designed as performance mics, close to a fairly loud singer or other source. If you use it at dialog distances, the output will be low. DSLRs often don't have the necessary sensitivity to record that kind of signal without electronic noise. A transformer can provide a little bit of voltage gain... but if you go too far in that direction, the medium impedance of a computer/dslr input can load things down. 2) Balancing. Transformer is a good way to preserve balanced cable when feeding an unbalanced input. I don't know the Kupul. Shure makes an XLR barrel with miniplug pigtail that does a pretty good job, if you respect what it's designed for. (And provide some strain relief, to protect the camera's poor minijack socket.) But by and large, a preamp will do a better job.
