LSL Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 Hello, I'm looking for opinions on the SQN pre amps VS the Cooper pre amps. I'm building a rig specifically for sound effect recording. I'll be using Neumann 191, MKH 8040, DPA 4061's etc. Record will be going line out into a 744. Bottom line is I'm looking for the the cleanest mixer especially in high gain situations (quiet ambience). Really appreciate the input. Thanks! John Quote
Olle Sjostrom Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 You wanna record four channels at once? The preamps in the 744t are great IMHO. I believe the sqn amps are a bit quieter, but I could be wrong. I've done tons of quiet recordings with a 744t with a 302 with either DPA 4060s or oktavas. It sounded great. Just thinking of price and such. Have you looked in to changing your whole setup? If I had to buy a mixer recorder for Fx I'd look at the 633 or Zaxcom Maxx. Quote
LSL Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 Yes, I just A/B/C'd a DEVA Maxx with my 702 and the SQN. I don't have access to a Cooper so I can't compare. The SQN did win over the 702 and Deva (IMHO). The pres on the 7 series and 6 series are all the same with the exception of the 788. They're great, I'm just looking for something a little "cleaner" shall we say. Wondering if anyone has both and or has used both and has an opinion. Thanks for your input Olle. Cheers, John Quote
Richard Thomas Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 I did a comparison a while back with the SQN IVe, Sonosax SX-M32, Sound Devices 552 and Fostex FM3. IMO preamps for quiet/cleanness (tested with a 416): Sonosax SQN Fostex (although v close to SQN!) Sound Devices I do prefer the pre's in the 744T and 664 to the 552, though Quote
LSL Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 Interesting. Yeah I'd buy Sonosax if I had the budget. Quote
Constantin Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 Yes, the Souns Devices preamps are different I think, at least between their recorders and mixers. I think the ones in the 7 series are better and quieter than in the mixers. Maybe add them to your try-out list Quote
Philip Perkins Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 I find the headroom a little better on the 7x pres vs the 6x pres. What I'm hearing may be just how the limiters work in the respective machines. p Quote
LSL Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 Philip, any thoughts on the Cooper, SQN or Sononsax? J Quote
studiomprd Posted June 24, 2014 Report Posted June 24, 2014 LSL: " looking for opinions on the SQN pre amps VS the Cooper pre amps. " and now adding the Sonosax pre's... all 3 are top notch, and opinions are personal, so yours might be different than mine, or..<others>... Quote
Philip Perkins Posted June 25, 2014 Report Posted June 25, 2014 Philip, any thoughts on the Cooper, SQN or Sononsax? J I wish. Back when I used to use mixers that weren't also recorders I didn't have the scratch for Coop or SQN. When I used/heard them I liked them a lot, but didn't do so enough to make a comparison. I don't see how you can go wrong with either--they are both Rolls Royces. (But too heavy for me to bag anymore.) philp Quote
mikewest Posted June 25, 2014 Report Posted June 25, 2014 Love the SQN Have a 4S series IV for sale! mike Quote

Very true, it's just I can't get my paws on the Sonosax thus all the questions. The transformer vs transformer less debate continues. Well actually not true, I've made my choice! Thanks everyone for all your input, much appreciated. Quote
