marcvonstuerler
It is beautiful indeed and that is why I am being so persistent. I have used Sonosax mixers before and they are amazing sound wise. This really hits the mark size wise and , if outs get sorted out, could be the answer to bag/cart hybrid system. My two cents: Dante is important, internal battery is nice but if it means no outs then out is the internal battery. Personally since i'm working with the sonosax preamps like on the R4 and the M32 its for me difficult to go elsewhere, i like so much what i hear, with all my differents mics, its a real pleasure, everydays. Naturaly it's also my subjectiv and personal taste of sound, how it's sounds is the most important think for me. I'm ready to make compromise, i like simplicity, i don't need/like too much possibilities and "gadget" fonctions but once is clear, the ergonomy, the technical possibilities are also decisive in my everyday work and i have some needs because i'm working in a chain of production sound for movie (recording/editing/mixing etc...) Until today i'm fine with the R4 & M32, i had to fine some solution to create more out frome the R4 and possibilities to send sound to cameras etc... All fine. With the develloping of this new R4+, i hope that i will find, like all of us, all what we need to be up to date with the actualy worklow on the set. Also have a setup for the most situation, not two or tree different. I hope we will come together with Sonosax near to an "ideal" for the most people they dream about this new exceptional Recorder and the complete modular system. Andy P
I'm interested in the timecode clock and accuracy also. Can current Sonosax users share their experiences and what about the SX-R4+, does it have the same clock?
RadoStefanov
I will personally prefer Ambient time clock. A name that I can trust. Recorders and cameras that do not have ambient clock have proved to be unreliable.
Tom Visser
Ambient is the company that I would rely on with my life. I like their design aesthetic, they understand our industry, the engineering prowess is unmatched, customer service is the best, and I think everyone should use their clocks. When I buy anything, if there is an Ambient option, Ambient it is for me. 4x Ambient Boom Poles (2 QS, 1 QX, 1 QP), 3x ACD 301RF, 2x EMP

marcvonstuerler
+1 for Ambient Products Currently, since the last update in july 2013, the TC accuracy on the SX-R4 is same as the Ambient, this is my experience.
Richard Thomas
The question is are the micpres the same as the sonosax mixers ones. They're a totally new design on this- this is from email correspondence with Pierre: "The new SONOSAX SXR4+ features a new and innovative kind of mic-preamplifiers with outstanding characteristics offering a total dynamic range of 132dB; therefore there is no longer any need for Gain trims and Limiters. Basically we will use the full dynamic range of the microphones, you will only have to decide prior to the recording if you want to apply a 20dB gain or not depending on which microphone is used (dynamic, condenser, ribbon..) and its placement." I'm interested in the timecode clock and accuracy also. Can current Sonosax users share their experiences and what about the SX-R4+, does it have the same clock? Old R4 clock is fine- 1ppm. Newer one is 0.5ppm
pvanstry
Interesting thing about the preamp. Does this mean that the fader has a lot of gain ( over nominal ) in order to ride the isos fairly low but have enough gain to have a decent mix? RadoStefanov
Lack of gain knov was my main concern. I tried the knob fader and was shock how precise it was. I have a video somewhere. Will post in an hour Interesting thing about the preamp. axel
old R4 TC clock: Pierre from Sonosax told me, that the (old) R4 TC generator is part of it's mainboard. No complaints since the 4.1xx update (2012?). Until then the clock was very accurate like 0,02 frames in 6 hs even in the very cold, I actually tested it in the freezer when I got it. But before software 4.1x there were intermittent faults of far more than one frame during some shoots. R4 preamps are still great. And it is so lightwight and energy efficient. I am curious about that new new concept of mixing without input trims. Does this mean isos around -40dBFS?
RadoStefanov
Here is the gain control video. You have a fine adjustment in very small steps.
Richard Thomas
Just wondering how much space a dante controller and 2ch DAC/ADC need? Could they be incorporated into a barrel with RJ45 on one end (PoE powered) and a 10pin Hirose on the other 2ch balanced out and unbalanced in. Could even have that on the camera end? Lectrosonics already do a small box designed for installation- DNT22. Could they do a version with locking connectors? Another option for balanced connections without adding much weight or bulk is the AJA ADA4 and a bit of custom cabling
daniel
is it ridiculous to imagine the dante box could be on the camera, thus allowing a very cheap light cable for the transmission of program audio? And if a box like the dnt22 were used/modified can the R4+ monitor the return coming into its dante board? dan.
daniel
...and if a dante connection is used for a camera send, does that preclude using the dante function for inputs from another source, eg a radio mic system? dan.
dolo72
I was thinking the same thing about a Dante breakout box having just seen the size of the apogee sennheiser micpre and A/D converter for iPhone I'm sure it's possible. I currently use the AJA ADA 4 with the sxr4 to use An AES input for mono or 2 channel mix track. Lisala

DNT22 is 2in2out, so yes, you could get a return- you may need to record it to monitor, depending how the software deals with it ...and if a dante connection is used for a camera send, does that preclude using the dante function for inputs from another source, eg a radio mic system? dan. No, you can split it with a router (another box, however). I'm planning on connecting radios with AES3, though

daniel
so something like: the insides of http://www.lectrosonics.com/US/22-Dante/product.html + http://www.neutrik.co.uk/en-uk/accessories/modules/na-housing + http://www.neutrik.co.uk/en-uk/xlr/dl-series/nc7md-l-b-1 + http://www.neutrik.co.uk/en-uk/industrial/ethercon/d-series/ne8fdv-b + xlr camera tails and return jack + know how and soldering skills = job done? Some more info on how r4+ will run dante would be useful. eg what are the monitoring and track assignment capabilities with dante inputs (in this case the camera return)? That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking, although I doubt the DNT22 insides would fit in there as is. When I've asked about the RJ45 option Sonosax have said they didn't have any details yet. I'm also wondering whether this might be a bit of look to the future here- we may start to see cameras with AVB connections on if it starts to catch on

JAX
Precisions: The SONOSAX SX-R4+ was designed as THE recorder compagnion, to be used over the shoulder, or on the cart.We do take your comments into account, however due to space limitation and power consumption we cannot add multiple outputs on the SX-R4+ so we are planning to make accessories including outputs and talkback system. Only 1130g (2.49lbs), less than half of others recorders, including the battery to work a full day. This allow you to carry it on the plane if needed, and save your back...! Audio specs are on the top: 135dB dynamic (ASA A), transformerless to avoid the loss of harmonics, phase shifts, distortions etc. Adding an optional connector, can be RJ-45 for AoE or XLR multi pins, it is a open system, to be completed with the SONOSAX AD8+, the control surface, or some others accessories. Considering your comments on multiples outputs, we cannot add inside the SX-R4+, for place, connectors and power, we are thinking to made a accessory including outputs and talkback system. We need sometimes to think about it, and show a draft in few months. The TC is our own SONOSAX design, 0.5PPM accuracy (sorry Chris Price...) Batteries are the same as Aaton. This was discussed with JPB when he was still with Aaton. Good sound day to all of us!
