scb Posted November 27, 2021 Report Posted November 27, 2021 I'm definitely interested in one of these, but need to figure out a way to buy the non-US version in the US
pscottm Posted November 30, 2021 Report Posted November 30, 2021 I bought a US version.. It works beautifully. Will take it w me outside the US and have it unlocked at some point. Maybe UK, Europe, or Canada.

Patrick Tresch Posted November 30, 2021 Report Posted November 30, 2021 The dual AD is locked. You can buy it and have the beautifull sonosax preamps but with 114 dB (A-weighted) dynamic range with USA version) instead of 135dB. If you use it out of USA you could make the change at the factory to get the dual AD hardware working without the Zaxcom patent limitation.

Is it a firmware lock or is it an actual hardware difference?
Patrick Tresch Posted December 1, 2021 Report Posted December 1, 2021 I think FW. But not the one we can find on the upgrade page.

Patrick Tresch Posted December 1, 2021 Report Posted December 1, 2021 I don't know the specific as I've the Non-US version. Call Sonosax or send them an e-mail. They will give that answer.
ivanovich Posted December 1, 2021 Report Posted December 1, 2021 Patrick, I’d look into buying it in Toronto or Canada since it wont be the US version. I got my SX-R4+ used. Looking into the history of the machine it looks like Toronto was the place where it was originally purchased.
Neil Mc Posted December 2, 2021 Report Posted December 2, 2021 Also a R4+ user here. Pretty sure it is firmware difference between the versions.
scb Posted January 5, 2022 Report Posted January 5, 2022 Is there any way to tell whether a unit is a US or non-US version? If I find a used one, how do I know which version it is for sure?
TomK Posted May 17, 2024 Report Posted May 17, 2024 Hi Sonosax Community, Is it possible to repair or replace the hard drive in my beloved SX-R4? As soon as I power on, the HD symbol flashes at the top on the display. The recorder refuses to record and says " CAN'T RECORD. OUT OF MEMORY" When I try to format the Hard Drive it tells me: "UNABLE TO FORMAT THIS VOLUME" Any advice would be gratefully received. Tom Kirk
David Lipka Posted May 21, 2024 Report Posted May 21, 2024 Hi TomK! Yes it's totally feasable, i did it in the past > i sent the Unit to Sonosax and they replaced the HD with an SSD. It was long time ago, but i suggest you contact directly Sonosax to have a clear answer how to proceed! Best regards, David
bigidibo Posted September 23, 2024 Report Posted September 23, 2024 Good evening gents, Wondering, if anyone can share some experiences who have shifted to a Sonosax R4+ boat from any other recorder, what were the biggest differences in sound? I do have 702. Recording mostly ambiance / SFX / acoustical musical stuff and I find it very pleasing and musical. Wondering what I would gain from Sonosax... Can anyone share some experiences? Cheers
ivanovich Posted October 30, 2024 Report Posted October 30, 2024 At one point my main rig was a 744t. I then updated to R4+. The mic amps and AD sound more musical to me. Love it for ambiance recording too. Of course it does great with dialogue. I like that the pots/faders can be configured to +24 which allows me to have conservative ISO track levels while having plenty of clean digital gain on the faders to make a healthy mix track. I believe the R4+ is one of the best sounding portable machines out there alongside the X3/mini. I do wish the X3/mini had the +24 digital make up gain.
Masaki Hatsui Posted October 31, 2024 Report Posted October 31, 2024 Hi, If you stay on two track recording, consider SX M2D2 preamplifier. Quality of pre-amp is same to that of R4+, and using digital out of M2D2 to 702, you'll have very clean and rich sound of Sonosax without any loss. Digital in of 7xx series is kind a old style, sync to source clock without any sample rate conversion, which became very rare to found in portable recording gear. I believe you'll hear clearly the difference of preamp quality.
RadoStefanov Posted October 31, 2024 Report Posted October 31, 2024 Potatoes potatos. Everything sounds good enough. Except 633
Derek H Posted November 1, 2024 Report Posted November 1, 2024 Disagree. 633 is fine. Just don’t push the line inputs those will crack up.
