Mack
Why does it seem like I get this message constantly? "Checkout will be available in 23 hours." It seems frequent. Maybe it's just coincidental that every time I need something.......
Eric Toline
It depends on the day & time that you log on to their website. B&H closes early on Friday and is closed on Saturdays for observance of the Jewish ritual of not working after sundown on Fridays and all day Saturday. They reopen on Sunday. They also close for various other Jewish holidays throughout the year.
codyman
It's a traditional Jewish business that observes the sabbath and thus is not open for transactions between Friday after sundown till Saturday after sundown.
Glen Deakin
Hours are listed on the site. Happens every week. Happy shopping. They are open new years day and labor day along with thanksgiving. Most places are not.
mikewest
Yep they even email you, if you have started and order, to advise they are open!!! 11 out of 10 I say. My last order was Monday last week, here in NZ, and I received it on Friday, remarkable!!! mike
RottenCarcass
Standard operating procedure for observant Jewish businesses - you'll get the same thing at Adorama. Totally worth the small trouble though, in my experience... B&H and Adorama are my go-to merchants.
Michael Miramontes
I find it quite respectable that they would close their doors in observance of their religion.

Constantin
So even their automated computer based shop system observes jewish holidays? Interesting.
Mack
That's the part that I find interesting is that the automated ordering system is Jewish too. I need to make a pilgrimage to the store in NYC one of these days. I always manage to pass it by because work gets in the way.

Glen Deakin
BeardsandHats.com redirects to B&H Just tried it. Its true
Rick Reineke
That has been B&H's policy from the beginning. Even when they were a small Mom & Pop sized shop downtown.
geordi
It is a matter of respect - Some of the employees might be Hasidic Jewish, some might not be. But it is respectful to be aware of the more restrictive tenets of their faith. Not allowing the computer ordering system to operate or run transactions is the same as a Jewish (or Amish, they do this too) farmer that doesn't work his animals or allow his animals to work on the Sabbath. Everyone gets a day of rest. I like their store and convenience too... But the service at our "usual suspects" like Pro-Sound and Gotham is better and more personal. The staff also tend to be more informed about the products and how we might use them.

johnpaul215
Ah yes, that makes sense. Although it still seems odd to put the rest-deservedness of computers on the same level as that of animals. It's a strange balance. For example a strict observant Jewish won't just not use electronics during sabbath, they have electronic stoves that power down (or they disconnect them). I guess the website is online because it's a "catalog", but you can't actually buy/checkout during that time..... Well, they can't do their side of the transaction during this time period. I can only imagine the discussions when internet shopping really hit and people had to adapt old ways to things like this.
