Wandering Ear
But couldn't I conclude that an automixer on a house construction set would be useless, or at least not as sweet as in a conference ? They are almost useless on a build show. The power tools are much louder than the voice, and will always open the mic. They can be used post fader with a lot of manual mixing, but realistically not worth it.
LarryF
But couldn't I conclude that an automixer on a house construction set would be useless, or at least not as sweet as in a conference ? I think you are correct in general. The algorithms are designed to ignore quick, percussive sounds even in a conference setting. Human speech has a fairly slow rise time, unlike a dropped object or hammer. I would say they are no match in a very noisy environment compared to a human mixer that knows the script. With a large number of people randomly speaking or in a boisterous conference setting they can be better since their "attention" doesn't wander and they aren't caught out by not knowing who is speaking next. Set up properly, in a known setting, they can replace the human. That does not mean they are better than a pro sound mixer on their game. Sound Dude
Why not a control surface for the 970. That would be awesome. You can't do any external Media with the 688. Cart mode would be So SIC if we had some kind of control surface for the 970. Or sound devices just needs to make a digital board already. With 12 faders. We all would buy it a real movie board with coms and all. GIVE IT!!!! We love you sound devices

Matt Radlauer
SO who owns the super slot? According to the SD guys, its an open platform that anyone can contribute or adapt to.
RadoStefanov
Ok. I will talk to the SD guys. I have some great ideas inspired by my own setup...

ninjafreddan
Ninja, in high noise environments, mix assist (on 788) does much less well but can still deliver usable results with a bit more steering to keep the noise under the threshold and the signal above the threshold. Same with booms and other sources that are likely to pick up multiple speakers at close volume levels. Thanks for the information! I guess for a temp track it's still better than me trying to ride levels while swinging boom. It would be great to have Mix Assist and just concentrate on the boom, especially with the boom extended and occupying both arms. I'm always recording rather hot and riding levels as much as I can, so Mix Assist should have no problems keep up with the Threshold. Ah, well. Gotta do a bit of saving up I guess. Thanks Frederick
dfisk
I want a motorized (dipole) whip that comes out automatically like a big car antenna from the '80s. This actually gives me an idea....

Jon Gilbert
Sorry for the thread hijack. But I just wanted to reply to "resonate". Zaxcom's next move is a real game changer for everyone. While I can't get into too many details at this point - I can say that Deva32 is only a small part of what Zaxcom will be announcing at NAB. Just be prepared to have your minds blown. Will these mind blowing features be actual working features, on units that ship, or the kind of vaporware imaginary 'wouldn't it be nice if.....' that Zaxcom specialise in? I think at NAB they're actually only going to be showing hand drawn sketches on a napkin. Why do you care, Jon, I don't think you are interested in anything from Zaxcom anyway. You should be glad they're doing something otherwise you wouldn't have any opportunity to point out all the things you think are wrong with Zaxcom. Ha Ha, so you don't like in a very heavy RF usage scenarios, being able to scan and remotely change TX frequencies very fast, being able to remote sleep TX's, remote gain control and power roll TX's, and record in TX's with timecode either continuously or in tandem with the recorder, the low power usage, the light weight, neverclip, digital TX that no one else without Zax RX's can tune in to, which can be encrypted anyway, you imagine all this is imaginary? And then there's ERX's..... Oooops this is a 688 thread!

While I can't get into too many details at this point - I can say that Deva32 is only a small part of what Zaxcom will be announcing at NAB. Just be prepared to have your minds blown. It does everything and I can sit back and do nothing... costs 1000 bucks, and sold to production companies directly... automatically enters scene and take data via a small keyboard on the back of the new ZAX slate and recorder turns on and off automatically through a pulse digital transmitter from the camera.. Will record 100 tracks, mount mics via a robotic arm from the side of the machine and auto level controls the mix through "never clip" and "never hear noise" auto gain system.. Charges through a pad the unit sits on.... has a small footprint, size of a deck of cards, and runs 2 days on New technology battery the size of a Mentos.... NO MORE wires of any kind.... time code is sensed from camera and is both auto adjusted and received... unit now sits on Camera cart. Wardrobe now mounts mics with CF card sized unit that auto searches freq., and sets levels on the fly.. NO TOUCH..it even powers down and self activates through pulse from mothership. Windproof no clothing noise mic. Boom mics are no longer used and when used are simply held by a PA.. Thanks Zax..... A FEW MORE YEARS...
