armandomacias
Hi everyone! I possibly have the opportunity to purchase a Deva IV for my cart as a backup recorder. I currently run a 01v96 with a 788T. Having to take the 788T on and off my cart constantly is starting to become a pain. And I would be getting a really good deal on the Deva. What are some of your experiences with the Deva IV? I've read that you can record direct to CF card via a firewire card reader, which is nice. Thanks in advance! Jeff Wexler
I used the Deva IV model for many years before I got the Deva 5.8. Now the Deva IV is my second recorder (I don't want to call it a backup recorder because that is mis-leading since I do not use it on the cart along with the main Deva 5.8). When first using the IV I was doing mainly DVD-RAM which was the standard deliverable before CF started to catch on. When having to deliver CF (which of course I preferred over DVD-RAM) I used the Lexar Firewire 400 reader/writer which worked fine (and continues to work fine when I use the IV on my mini-cart or in mobile situations). It is true that Firewire 400 card readers are quite scarce, the Lexar model is still available and there are many of them out there not even being used anymore by Deva users who no longer have their Deva IVs. John Blankenship
A Deva IV is a BEST BUY these days. If eight tracks are sufficient for your workflow the IV does most everything a V or 5.8 does. A 5.8 or 16 has more knobs, but if you're feeding it via a mixer, that becomes a moot point. A CF card writer/reader is not built in, but an external firewire card reader works just fine. One caution, don't plug or unplug firewire cables while the unit is turned on -- there is a possibility of shorting out the port. Observe this and you'll be extremely happy with your purchase. A Deva IV, V, 5.8, or 16 is still one of the best cart recorders available at any price -- an even better unit if it has the updated screen. If the brightest setting is on number 1, then it's the newer screen -- on the previous screen, the brightest setting is number 10. Buy it. Enjoy it. Glen Trew
There's no reason the Deva IV couldn't be the primary recorder. Before buying, I'd find out if it has the 2nd generation DSP board with sample rate conversion, which should affect the price up or down (it was a $1000 upgrade).
