PSC Solice Mini with no serial number?

Hey all -

I've sent PSC an email about this too but since it's the weekend I thought I might get some answers here as well.

I've found someone selling a like-new condition Solice Mini mixer at a great price... Great enough that it started to raise some red flags. When I asked about a serial number they sent me the picture I've attached below - which seems to show that there is no serial number on this particular unit.

That seems weird to me - does that seem weird to anyone else? Could it be a fake?

The seller has seemed very open and forthcoming with pictures, and all of the other pics appear to show a genuine Solice Mini (to my inexperienced eyes anyway). But this seems strange.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks!

-Mike

Whoever is selling it has enrolled in E-Bays international delivery service so they must know who the seller is.

It wouldn't be a knock-off. Ron makes these in his factory in Valencia, CA (right by my old house). There would be no money in someone making a copy. It is odd there is no s/n. I think it best to ask the seller's real name and check with Ron. If the seller is willing, the back panel comes off pretty easily, if it's like the big Solice. I think Ron puts s/n inside too.

In the meantime, if something is too good to be true, it probably is.

Looking at the Ebay listing, the seller lists his location as Glendale, California.

If he's that close to a professional cine center, it might be possible to persuade him to make it available for inspection. I'm sure that many of us in the Los Angeles area would be willing to help out as local agents.

I recommend asking him if he could accommodate an inspection. The best circumstance would be for him to bring the mixer to Location Sound Corp. for a meeting. It could be inspected on the sales floor or LSC would make one of their meeting rooms available. This professional meeting facility would provide the seller assurances that he wasn't driving to a mugging. Of course, Trew Audio, The Audio Department and other pro facilities would offer the same service. (One might also choose PSC but they're a bit more distant in Valencia.)

If he's resistant to the long drive from Glendale to North Hollywood (maybe 6 miles), you could offer to meet in a Starbucks near his home.

Thanks guys - appreciate the advice. Ron got back to me and said that is it possible that the unit left the factory without a serial number, as that is the last thing that happens before the unit is boxes for shipping. He said that the box should have the serial number on it as well, so I may ask for more pictures of the box. He said that he has not heard of any stolen or missing Solice minis.

Had an escrow issue a few years ago : a Nagra 6 was for sale on a UK site for a very tempting price...I contacted the seller by mail and phone, and he turned out to be in Bergamo Italy.I said it would be easy for me to flyover and pick it up,and pay cash. After a few days he contacted me and said it would be more convenient if the recorder was shipped through a shipper he knew, and that I had to pay him...Turned out that on the shippers hinkey website I could also see that the same recorder (non existing..) was also about to be sold and 'shipped' to a fellow soundman from the US..Escrow style!

Strange thing in this case:why would anybody buy a Solice mini without any knowledge of what 'the thing in the box' can do,and call it a 16 ch Bose mixer??'Something rotten in the state of Denmark'.And as Dave Waelder already suggested: why not meet, and if it seems OK:Buy!

Just wanted to update the thread...

I talked with the seller a bit - he seemed like a genuine guy with maybe more money than knowledge, who just bought what was recommended to him and didn't really use it. So I negotiated a return policy and bought the mixer.

It arrived today, and I opened it up and found the serial number inside the unit right where Ron said it would be. I sent Ron pictures and he verified that all looked good with the mixer - it is a valid serial number, it is written in his handwriting, and has his initials next to it.

So it looks like I got a pretty sweet deal and I'm quite excited!

Thanks for all your input!
