RPSharman
Hello - I am going to be back in LA for the summer - will need a car. I have to buy a non-owner insurance policy to avoid $12 additional per day for California liability coverage and to be legal on the road. It'll also cover be in borrowed cars, so that's good too. My credit card gives me collision/comp on rentals up to 31 days, so need to rent 4 weeks at a time. Just wondering if anyone has a bright ideas or hidden gems. Currently looking at 30 rentals at various outlets at about $600, which is quite a lot. The UK has an air bnb type thing where you can borrow someone's car who is away or isn't using their car. Does such a thing exist in LA? Thanks, Robert
Eric Toline
Try places like Rent a Dent or Rent a Wreck for better prices on car rentals. Caveat Emptor.

IronFilm
If you will be there for a few months then just buy a car secondhand then sell it when you leave. Even if you make a loss it will still cost you less than a rental would cost!

Eric Toline
Rentals from the usual rental places have 1 or 2 yo cars that have almost zero chance of failure with automatic replacement if your rental should fail. You get what you pay for, mainly peace of mind.
DSX
Try Galpin Studio Rentals in Los Angeles (https://www.galpinstudiorentals.com) Most production companies rent vehicles from them and I have rented from them as well. I don't know if them renting me a vehicle was a favor or not, but it was done. They are very familiar with the ways of film production. RPSharman
Galpin prices are very high, as they include insurance, which I don't need. They also have a regular car rental company that is not very competitive, even though they gave me "friends and family" rate. I have bought 7 or so cars from Galpin over the years, so they usually treat me well. I am sure I could chat with production, but I'd rather avoid it. So far Costco travel seems to be the best deal.
