Jeff Wexler Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 This is what I go through everyday now on this site, often up to 10 spam-bot registrations waiting for approval. There is no way I am going to approve a member whose email address is "pornstarlickmyass @ geemail.ru". So, I have to just reject all these but I can't find a way to stop them all together except to suspend the online registration procedure. It is really just annoying for me since I have stopped anyone from actually signing up and posting. - Jeff Wexler Quote
studiomprd Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 it is really wild out there in cyberspace! is it possible in your software, for the registration process, to include one of those "type the letters you see" graphic's ?? also, I believe you should report the IP addresses to your service provider as spambots... Richard Lightstone, CAS Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Jeff, Can you block those IP addresses? RL Quote
Jeff Wexler Posted January 4, 2009 Author Report Posted January 4, 2009 it is really wild out there in cyberspace! is it possible in your software, for the registration process, to include one of those "type the letters you see" graphic's ?? also, I believe you should report the IP addresses to your service provider as spambots... See that's the weird thing... I do have the graphic (crazy text in box) that is supposed to only be "person readable" but somehow things still get through. Because I now require activation, no one actually gets to sign up, but they still get into the list of thiose awaiting activation. I did look into blocking the IP addresses but they change everyday. - Jeff Wexler Quote
Richard Lightstone, CAS Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Jeff, You've done a great job of policing your site from the crazy stuff that populates places like RAMPS. Sorry it's so work intensive. My personal blog through Wordpress has a spam filter for the comments section. It holds anything suspicious - I can set the amount of 'gate keeping' I want. I wonder if there is any third party software that can help you block this pernicious stuff? Good luck and regards, RL Quote
John Steigerwald Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 Hey Jeff, have a look at this. Quote
André Boisvert Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 Hey Jeff, have a look at this. This makes a whole lotta sense. To add to what was written about banning IP addresses, my ISP is a big, national, coast to coast provider. When I log on, I'm assigned an IP address. I have no control over it. Judging by the stats I see on my little website, I'm probably assigned 10-20 different addresses. I thought I had one address specific to me, but that's not the case. Jeff, are you having the same problem over at cinemasound? Quote
Jeff Wexler Posted January 5, 2009 Author Report Posted January 5, 2009 Hey Jeff, have a look at this. Thanks for that. It looks like there are increased security routines in newer versions of SMF. I will either upgrade to newer version or try and install these mods. - Jeff Wexler Quote
Marc Wielage Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 What a nightmare! The worst thing about this is most of these are "bots," just crawling around and spreading spam all over the net. Nasty little creatures. Jeff, can you add one of those things where the user registers by typing a cryptic message from a graphic? I believe this is called "Captcha." Apparently this is available for the Simple Machines Forum sites at this link: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1558 --Marc W. Quote
