Sound Devices 633 slate microphone

Hi everybody. I recently purchased a SD 633 that I love. My only issue is with the internal slate mic, it sounds crapy, hi-medium with some resonnance. Do you have the same feeling with yours? It's no big deal but I'd like to know if mine has a problem, or if it's just normal. Thanks

Most slate mics sound like ... slate mics.

Typically they're a tiny, inexpensive electret element placed behind a small panel opening.  if you can understand the words, it"s a good slate mic -- if you can't, it's a bad one.

If you desire better sound quality, that's when you'd use an external slate mic.

Ok. No I can understand what's being said on it but I expected something a bit better. On my Aeta Mixy the sound isn't that bad. There's not this medium dirty color. I don't think there's some dust on it as I noticed this when the unit was brand new.

Yes, it's a slate mic, and does not need to sound like a Schoeps. I have however, when using it as Com on the 664 to talk to my boom op, in order to save their ears from bleeding, connected a Omnigoose > Ambient Eumel > XLR to TA3 > slate mic input. Note that his only makes sense because I had those bits already.

I was looking at this as a possible slate mic for the 664:

But since I haven't tried this, I of course cannot say with any certainty that it will work...

Has anyone used the Remote Audio's modular cable design with built in slate mic? I like the idea of being able to switch cables with different phones but haven't had a chance to try one out yet. I wonder if the slate mic closer to the voice will make it sound better.....but yes, it's still a slate mic....
