Christian Spaeth
This is a pretty cool new feature in some new Mercedes Cars I learned about on a shoot this week. I will probably never drive one of these but I find it interesting. When the sensors notice an impending accident a short bit of pink noise is played to protect the hearing from damage during the accident. http://www.popsci.com/sound-safety-in-2016-mercedes-e-class
dlwilliams
more on car tech-- Lux cars are so quiet there seems to be a need to artificially pump some engine sound back into the passenger compartment http://www.caranddriver.com/features/faking-it-engine-sound-enhancement-explained-tech-dept /dw
Wandering Ear
I did a drive and talk shoot in a BMW i8 recently, being an electric sports car, the engineers felt it was necessary to add lots of muscle car engine noise inside the cab. They did not find it necessary to allow people to turn it off however. Very annoying. I think we should be embracing how quiet modern cars are, in all ways. It's a huge improvement. LarryF
The BMW engineers probably put cards on their bike spokes. At least with European vehicle noise regulations, they have to put the noise in the vehicle and not on the outside.
al mcguire
>The BMW engineers probably put cards on their bike spokes< It was also a young sound guy thing for me I remember buying those baseball cards packs w/flat bubble gum grading the cards into 2 types - STARS and SPOKES thanks for the memory jog Larry
dlwilliams
How to disable BMW's ASD (Active Sound Design) system http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=983411 It's buried in the trunk apparently-- they estimate about an hour to remove the liner and paneling:) geesh /dw
Wandering Ear
Hadn't seen that fix at the time. All the fixes I came across then were pulling a fuse, which disabled a few other things in the car.
