Gerard-NYNY
The New York City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to give freelance workers a set of protections against wage theft that are believed to be the first of their kind in the country. Known as the Freelance Isn’t Free Act, the measure requires anyone hiring a freelance worker to agree in writing to a timetable and procedure for payment, and increases the potential awards to freelancers bringing legal complaints against those who have failed to pay them promptly. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/28/nyregion/freelancers-city-council-wage-theft.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fnyregion&action=click&contentCollection=nyregion®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=sectionfront&_r=
Pete D
Seems like a good step forward. Though as someone who lives in New Jersey but works in NYC, I'm curious how this bit is going to play out: Quote It would cover workers who live in New York City; there is some ambiguity about whether it would apply to workers who live outside the city but work for companies based in the city. Gerard-NYNY
My feeling is that the law is applicable for out of the city freelancers with clients in the city. Any possible defense that cited locality of the freelancer would most likely be ruled invalid by a judge the first time the issue is put forth.
