"Hollywood in Crisis"

"For over 50 years, retired LA Police Officers have escorted, protected and monitored film crews within the City limits. These retired officers work independently from the Police Department.

LAPD wants to take over by mandating that film work be done by active duty police officers on overtime work details. The LAPD is also attempting to force the retired officers into a uniform that in no way resembles any law enforcement uniform, making them unrecognizable as figures of authority."

In my experience, the retired LA Police Officers of the "Film Unit" do an incredible job. The city's new proposal will definitely cost productions more money and will be a disincentive towards location shooting in L.A.

What is Scott's little motto??? "It worked until I fixed it"... Something like that. I suspect this will be the way it becomes with the change concerning Movie Cops. The great group of retired LAPD who work with us on the streets understands the workings of film sets and our needs for doing the work. This understanding doesn't come overnight. I do not see an upside to changing the system as suggested.

This picture was taken by my wife Carol on one of the movies she was working on. I put this up on one of my other websites and I titled it "The Cops Are Our Friends." What Crew says is so true ... most of us that have been working here in L.A. for all these years have really gotten to know the cops, and they know US ... I think the "movie cops" are an integral part of the moviemaking process. Some of the best dialog I have recorded in downtown L.A. I owe to the L.A.P.D.

It would be tragic to lose the "regular" motor officers.  These guys have great stories, great dedication, and most importantly understand what our needs are.  Can you imagine having to train a new set of cops every time you load up an insert car?  It'd be a total disaster!

The extra income is very important to some of these retirees too.
