Lavalier outer jacket repair

Hey!

 

I have a mic (DPA 4060) with a torn outer jacket, halfway up the cable. Microphone seems fine, no damage to the shield or cabling itself.

 

Anyone have repair methods to share?  A particular gauge of heat-shrink,  type of tape, or liquid repair?

You can try liquid tape (horrible messy smelly stuff) and/or heatshrink tubing.  But you will probably want to consign this mic to your "backup"

or "B" group since it's damaged and is now prone to breaking at that point.

I'd put on some electrical tape as first aid, probably Advance brand since it doesn't gunk up that easily. A more permanent solution would be proper adhesive lined heatshrink tubing, but that might even require reterminating to get it on there.

We typically use heat shrink on most lav mics that have this issue, we only have the black varient but here is the link to the grey version which might blend in a little better: http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-power/13634gry/heatshrink-2-1-grey-2-40mm-100m/dp/CB10994

 

The general order code is 13634 for the black, it may be avilable in other colours than just black and grey if you look around.

A fast fix is to smooth the cover down and coat area with clear nail polish.

problem: it was a DPA and the shrink tubing wasn't going to fit over either end of the mic. Had to cut the microdot and terminate permanent w. ta5. Not such a bad thing!

You can also find 3:1 or 4:1 heatshrink to get it over the connector or mic end and then shrink it down. Try heatshrink.com
