Looking for a non audio looking bag for my MixPre 3

I'm looking for a bag/carrying case for my MixPre 3. I don't want your typical audio case that professionals carry their gear in. I'm looking for a non descript kind of bag that will protect my gear. Does anyone have recommendations that I can take a look at thanks. I actually like the Portabrace ARDR05 bit think its a bit too small for the MixPre-3.

It rather depends, of course, on what else you want to put in the bag. Last summer I too needed a nondescript bag for my Mixpre-3 while recording on a 3-week tour with a band across Europe. In that case I also wanted to accommodate a couple of cables, various mics, two Rycote invision suspensions, two Baby Ball gags, two small Panasonic cameras (GX80), a tablet, batteries, filters etc., but still got away with the compact Thinktank Retrospective 7 (https://www.thinktankphoto.com/collections/retrospective-series/products/retrospective-7 ), which proved excellent. There are smaller ones in the Retrospective series if you need less in addition to the Mixpre-3. These bags have less unnecessary (horizontal) depth than many.

Cheers,

Roland

Yeah... I was not kidding... That unit is so small..  a small man purse or a fanny pack is about right... I have one in a really small audio bag and its swimming in there..  Leave room for a small sync box so you can run a small cable into the aux in... your good to go... unless you want to use 3 wireless...then, back to the small audio bag..

Wow you've got that bag filled to the brim, what are you using to power everything.

+1 for a fanny pack bag

Ive been using a jansport fanny pack from mountain equipment coop, its been great - inexpensive, and light

Just a 49whr smart battery and an audioroot bds, heres another photo of the actual fanny pack.

Right angle cables for the wires and cut a little cable entrance in the side to hardline the boom. The fanny pack acts as a protective layer, I dont need or want much more than that for this bag.

i came across this and thought of this thread, probably a bit big, but looks like it has structure and nice place to carry a rycote and boom pole (if that was a requirement): https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N5V58P2/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B01N5V58P2&pd_rd_wg=U64u2&pd_rd_r=GH5FB1XQAK0YBH90WH27&pd_rd_w=sOnUn

Some fun, and a couple actually useful :-) suggestions so far.

For both on-body and transport, maybe swing by an outdoor-equipment/backpacking store and see what they have. In my neighborhood, REI has a wide selection of hiking and walking bags that can work. https://www.rei.com Cabela's and Bass Pro shops have even more. Also drop by a big and good hardware store. I've used pouches and stuff from CLC to hold like RX on a camp's belt, etc. CLC makes a bunch of tool bags/pouches/etc. There are other brands, too but this might spark some ideas... and then a visit to a store. https://www.goclc.com Ya, I'm into bags for some reason.

But to help guide suggestions., why don't you want a bag/case to carry your gear? Cost? Trying to not attract thieves? Style? Something else?

And just so I'm clear, are you looking for something to hold your kit while you're using it, or more for transportation between gigs?

By the OP's ref to the Portabrace AR DR05, just a very small bag for the MixPre-3. Looking at which, a similarly shaped bag - and smaller than the Thinktank Retrospective bags that i suggested earlier - to the Portabrace AR DR05 is the smallest leather and canvas National Geographic bag in their 'Africa' range: https://www.manfrotto.co.uk/national-geographic-africa-camera-sling-bag-for-csc uuid-1800px-inriverimage_379779.jpg

I have one here (for a mirrorless camera) and have just tried it with the MixPre-3, which fits well: space underneath for mics perhaps, and you would probably need some right-angle XLRs. And it's being sold at a bargain price these days.

Not sure what you do with cables, headphones, mics, wind protection etc. with such a minimal bag as the OP seems to want though.

Cheers,

Roland

Someone on another forum recommended a small messenger bag from Wowelife:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07211MM6G/?coliid=IPS1KIVZL6PND&colid=3NCCW0ZQSXDER&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

It looks a bit small if you want to add more kit to it.

You might also consider the Think Tank Retrospective 5 (or other size) bag:

I am using a Lowepro camera bag with good padding, an Event Messenger. I don't remember the exact model though but it may be the 100.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/893440-REG/Lowepro_lp36461_0ww_Event_Messenger_100.html?sts=pi

A bit similar to the Think Tank bag, but more square looking (I think Lowepro have some odd obsession with right angles) and cheaper.

It has a feature I like for urban areas. "Switchable" velcro bands for the bag cover. If you enable them it gets really noisy to open.

If you disable them then the cover relies only on the typical snap-on latch.

I have been considering modifying the bag, my sister in law has a clothes mending business and she's pretty good. In case I go that route I will

share the description of course.

The bag has been holding a Fostex FR-2LE comfortably (although with some cable bending) and the tiny MixPre 3 almost gets lots inside. I would

add two velcro straps to hold it in place and some molle straps to the front.
