Schoeps MiniCMIT or DPA 4017b

... where a CUT1 filter was the only fix ...

Curious with all the Schoeps regulars here. I have a Cut 1 and find it indispensable but have since liked the 'look' of the Cut 2 more. Use my Schoeps so little to warrant any change but always been curious as I say if anyone doing production/dialogues here uses both or the 2 over the 1?

I also like the option of cutting at the mic and for that reason like both the Cut 1 and my MKH 40 over the 8040s for much stuff, including boom.

And with the excellent (Cut 1 Cut 2 LPF etc) modular accessories already in the Schoeps canon I wonder why a shotgun 'capsule' never appeared - always a single unit.

(I have mics by both, and love both - but don't use them in production sound as per OP post - so apologies for more questions, no answers!)

Cheers, Jez

I use a Cut 60 on my schoeps and love it. It’s so tiny, unlike the cut 1 and it’s a very effective cut at a reasonable 60hz. Just enough to get rid of crap I don’t want.

Cheers Trey, forgot that one - relatively recent if I remember? Yep, that pretty much does what the MKH in-builts does (+ several other LCF on several mics). Just loved the variable cut of the Cut 1/2s (and always hoped that MKH would come up with a similar style gadget with extreme LCF and variable higher LCF for the 80xx series, specifically for dialogue but embracing musical instruments etc.

Just liked the idea of the lower spectrum graph of the LC2 although I accept it to be more specialised.

Old folk here will remember the multi-stepped EQ options on the Nagra 4 models, designed to cope for film and music possibilities (recorder cut I know, but an interesting blast from the past for completism).

And Cheers Derek - online timing! J

Edit - addendum!

Forgot to mention I've never looked into the variable Cuts 1/2 possibly adding a tiny bit of noise which perhaps the Cut 60 or other fixed cuts wouldn't. Maybe they don't but I've often thought they might. Nevertheless, the variability is a feature I love about the Cut 1 and wanted for my other mics.

4017c vs 4017b sounds definetly different no matter the switches. I do like 4017c more but this little and light mic isn't easy for the suspension.

Best for me is Rycote Inv-lite 19. The supplied Fluffy does really need time to get on so a quick change into a basket is not easy. And I have no basket yet I am happy with. I do have the DPA Basket made by Rycote but the Inv-lite suspension is better.

I wonder if there is a outdoor basket for the minicmit that could be easily stripped down to use indoors.

Since we're talking about the differences between the 4017B and the 4017C, how different are they, really? I've heard the C-preamp being described as "smoother", but since the C preamp is so short, shockmounting and wind protection seem like a challenge unless you can afford Cinela. I've used the B preamp and I know it to sound really good, but I've yet to hear a head-to-head comparison between the B and the C.

To the MiniCmit users: Do you guys miss the filters (I never used the Cmit5U)?

I have a Pianissimo and I feel like the DPA 4017B would be more flexible. I can just unscrew the Osix, attache the swivel and use it indoors without a problem.

Plus I could probably unscrew the capsule and switch to 4018B with the same Osix.

I prefer the sound of the Mini, but the current suspensions don't seem ideal for indoor use (someone using the Rycote Invision Lite Boom?).

I sometimes miss the the high frequency boost for when I put it in a zeppelin.

I use the rycote inv 6 with the harder grey lyres. Works pretty well.

No I've not heard of a side by side B to C comparison, it would be nice to have an idea of the quantity of 'softer' though I would expect it to be fairly neglible?

from the DPA website

https://www.dpamicrophones.com/accessories/mmp-c-compact-microphone-preamplifier

"Ultra-compact preamplifier with active drive for impedance balancing. It has a slightly softer character than the other preamps in the d:dicate™ Microphones Series."

I boomed a show last summer with the C preamp. Mostly with the 4017, some of it with the 4018. With proper wind protection/shock mount and somewhat decent handling technique, it was no problem.

Yes, and that's what I meant by "usually". In situations like these, it does come in handy to have it.

- I could be wrong here, but this may not be as big of a problem with the DPA 4017C, since it can take a massive amount of SPL (146 dB).

Johnny, what mount and wind protection are you using on your 4018C?

That show, I was booming for another mixer, and it was his mics... If I remember correctly, we used a Cinela mount and *I think* a Rycote INV-Lite 19 - the one with the "lever" that attaches only on one side. Since the 18 only got used indoors, it only had it's own foam on.

With the 4017C, I recall the foam worked surprisingly well, even for exteriors. We added the Bubblebee Spacer Bubble with fur when the wind picked up a bit.
