lyrnxG
I soldered a 45W car charger to 4 pin XLR and tried charging my macbook. Although it charges at first, a few minutes later it breaks the connection due to what I think is the "Power Delivery negotiation protocol". I guess the computer negotiates a voltage, and wattage through a circuit board found in apple brand ac adapters, and other licensed by apple products. After doing some digging, I found this: USB Type C Power Converter with 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V & 20V Power Delivery - PD60:https://www.bixpower.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BX-DD60PD&CartID=1 Anyone have success with cheaper alternatives? borjam
As far as I know they are not limiting it to Apple chargers, but they are picky with protocol details. So only power supplies supporting the power delivery standard will work.
Vincent R.
This one goes up to 75 W. No personal experience but check the "review", and it's half the price: https://www.appleworld.today/blog/2017/12/8/review-gearmo-75w-usb-c-car-charger-lets-you-charge-your-macbook-on-the-road
lyrnxG
Ended up going with the Pwr+ USB-C Laptop Car Charger. Looked into the Gearmo charger, but there was over heating issues in the reviews. So far the Pwr+ operates with almost no additional heat (EDIT: if charging from a low battery, this unit will get hot, but not enough to concern me). Macbook pro reads 80 to 90 watt input. Impressed! https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B004G6W8U4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=
