Johnny Karlsson
Thanks, Sound Devices! Yeah, they listened to the requests and made it happen - auto mute on AUX outputs while in Stop for 688 and 633: https://www.sounddevices.com/support/downloads/633-firmware
codyman
Well that's a pleasant surprise. Good to have the option!
Dave Pullmer
Wow - alot of people are going to be happy to see this. So useful for commercials.
Derek H
Maybe more importantly they fixed a pretty serious bug where you could lose a recording if you renamed a previous take.
Ilari Sivil
This is going to be supremely useful.
Wandering Ear
Awesome. That's a great feature addition.
afewmoreyears
I for one have been polietly screaming for this for over a year...I am thrilled... Every time I spoke with SD I asked about it... Spoke to a few big wigs...lol, and begged.. For us commercial guys this is a God send...Ike Gomer says... Thank you.... thank you ...thank you... Philip Perkins
I am very impressed. I figured that SD never seeming to get to this meant that the 6xx machines were not capable of it somehow. There hasn't been a new model in that series in some years now, and the new run of MixPres have come out since then, so it is all the more impressive that SD would devote the resources to making this happen. I understand that many recordists using SD gear may not understand what a big deal this is, UNTIL they end up on a shoot with a paranoid director and a backfield of ambitious, meddlesome clients and agency folks. A manually operated client-headphone mute system is an embarrassing accident waiting to happen. On a fast moving shoot it is inevitable that you will blow it at some point, probably every day, even with blinking lights etc etc. For working soundies this automute thing is as big a deal as auto-mix! Thanks!

Derek H
Next step. Get it to switch to Muzak when going to mute mode.

Funny, but that's a great idea...provided something can be played that does not enrage someone.... probably impossible..

Funny, every time I think of Muzak I picture 4 or 5 folks in a elevator ever so slightly swaying back and forth to the Muzak version of "Girl From Ipanema"... Derek H
Another option could be to switch to a lynch-esque drone when in standby.

I'd prefer the "Alien" soundtrack because no one can hear you scream when 500 people from the agency are all on set and want comteks... 😱
Philip Perkins
You could give them a choice: crickets, Getz-Gilberto, or maybe gently whispered messages of affirmation....
Johnny Karlsson
Probably not possible, but it would actually be useful if one could select one input to be working in the opposite way .... and be excluded from the “Mute All”. This way one could have an iPod etc. connected - let’s say, option of Return A auto-un-mutes to X3X4... to avoid the “my comtek is not working” person visit every time cut is called. (Would of course mute during Recording).

I will probably give a small announcement each day explaining the feed is cut between takes.
PMC
Alas, no love for the 664 with firmware 4.60. Daniel at Sound Devices confirms the 664 does not gain the Auto-Mute function across x1,x2 with this firmware.
IronFilm
Yeah the 664 is an older design than the 633/688, is why the 664 also didn't get automix
Mobilemike
I'm not sure about older, but the 664 is an analog mixer with a digital recorder integrated, whereas the 633 and 688 are both digital mixers. Unfortunately features can't be added to an analog device through a firmware update. -Mike
Philip Perkins
SD has added to the 664 features over the years via firmware. But not being a digital mixer means it can't have purely digital features like automix. On the other hand it does do a few things the later 6xx machines can't (mix bus or "cascade" input, for instance).
karlw
They've added control support (via Superslot) for the SRc-941 receiver, for their 688/SL-6 which is nice for any users with that combination of equipment, or at least considering it. drpro
I installed the auto mute update and now cannot hear anything!!
afewmoreyears
Uh oh... After firing up my 633 after the update I too can't seem to get audio out of the AUX outputs... with the auto mute on or off.. I have not dug in yet but thats what I found as well.. Slate mic I can hear out of the output to comms, and tone as well... but no inputs... I ran through the menus and saw nothing glaring... There may be , and I'm just saying, maybe an issue with that firmware.. Call the mothership in the A.M.
