"tie pin-3 to pin-1 of the XLR-3M" meaning

Recommended Posts

Just looking in the Sound Devices 633 manual and noticed this on page 29:

Quote

For unbalanced connections, tie pin-3 to pin-1 of the XLR-3M connector of the cable.

What does this mean? Are they advising that you somehow add a connection between pins 3 and 1 of the male end of the unbalanced XLR cable. If so how do you do this.

Many thanks in advance.

This is typical for connecting an unbalanced signal to a balanced input.

Take a piece of wire and solder it from pin 1 to pin 3. I use the extra wire attached to a resistor.

Easy way to unbalance is to split the ground into two legs, tin both and solder one one leg to pin one and the other to pin 3.
