Schoeps cmit5u In Cold Weather

Recommended Posts

I have a brief exterior shoot scheduled this week. It's an exterior courthouse interview so I only have one chance to get it right.   My "go to" exterior mic is a Schoeps cmit5u.  Humidity for this shoot is predicted between 54% to 40% so I'm not worried about any sort of humidity issues, and the weather forecast is around 20 degrees.    I'm wondering if anybody has experienced any issues with their cmit 5u in cold temperatures.

I also have a Sennheiser MKH-50 that I normally use for run 'n gun situations or higher humidity environments.

Which mic would you give the nod to?

I had an issue before with the wet weather situation. Felt like the key to it is that you have to let the mike stay inside the case for a while so that it can adapt the weather. Mine goes bad in the middle of the shooting. Switch to a CMC641 instead.

I’ve used my CMIT in the -40F Chicago winter last year without any problems. Only issue I’d be worried about is condensation buildup from moving between outdoors and indoors. So long as it’s “climatized” you should be fine.
