SoundCyclops
Hi all, First time poster long time lurker. I’ve been working my way through the ranks of friends’ short films, to actors’ showreels to my first paid sound recordist work. To cap it off I’ve been given a bursary (!!!) from ScreenSkills to do the short Location Sound Recordist course at UK’s NFTS. I never thought professional sound was a career open to me as I’m fully deaf in my left ear, however I’ve been drawn increasingly to it over the last 5 years. My question is: does a single sided headphone exist that plays from two speakers in one headphone? After reading many deaf people use the Beyerdynamic DT252 (https://europe.beyerdynamic.com/dt-252.html) I foolishly assumed this was my golden ticket, but alas, after purchasing it, it only plays the left side. How do people use just one side for monitoring? I used to have ScanSound’s single sided headphone (https://www.scansound.com/single-ear-stereo-headphone.html) which plays a stereo mix out of one side but the sound quality wasn’t the best. I’d appreciate any leads (aha) or work arounds that are glaringly obvious that I might have missed! Thanks for your time 🙏 Nick SoundCyclops
Rick Reineke
What gear are you using? Assuming your recorder/ mixer has monitor routing, send both channels equally to L & R HP bus, or just to the side for your good ear. You could also rewire the HP plug so both L & R go to both sides equally or just to the preferred side.
Mobilemike
I stumbled on these yesterday and thought they looked pretty cool. No personal experience with them but cool concept. Yuni: The Single-Sided Stereo Headphone (3D Printed Headphones) by Glassophonic https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XYJ1WT3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GMvtEbMXG2R7B Seems to have two drivers in one earpiece so one ear can get a stereo experience. -Mike
