Mungo
They were on their way to their vehicles after shooting for "heute show" which is a highly popular satirical programme in Germany. It's presented weekly on public German broadcaster ZDF. Five members of the crew are in hospital. Let's hope they will get well soon. Background of the attack is unclear, perhaps from far right or from far left or violent opponents of corona restrictions. Six suspects were arrested by the police. This could be us. Let's hope the best for them. What a shame. IronFilm
https://www.stern.de/kultur/tv/-heute-show--reagiert-bestuerzt-auf-angriff---kein-thema-in-der-show-9247758.html Might be related to May 1st (which is International Workers' Day, the biggest event on the calendar for some leftist activist). So this attack could be done by protesters who were there for May 1st? As there would have have been many on the streets during this day. This is the talent (along with thew crew) who was attacked, Abdelkarim Zemhoute: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdelkarim_(Kabarettist) https://www.bild.de/regional/berlin/berlin-aktuell/bengalos-braende-mehrere-festnahmen-in-walpurgisnacht-in-berlin-70380478.bild.html
Mungo
Thank you Iron! The video you linked shows Abdelkarim discussing with conspiracy theorists who are protesting against corona restrictions. Abdelkarim is well known in Germany. He's famous for his jokes about stereotypes of Germans and immigrants, by being of foreign origin himself. The suspects were provisionally released. The case was handed over to state protection office which is an indication that there is a political background. But anyway, good news: ZDF says that the camera crew has already left hospital! DanieldH
Right winged circles are praising the attack on social media. I highly doubt, this will turn out to have a leftist background. The "Heute Show" (roughly comparable to last week tonight, though less in depth) has been discussing right winged movements for a long time and is maybe the most prominent example of the so called "Lügenpresse" aka lying press among right wingers. IronFilm
Quote The attackers attacked the team with homicides, quoted ZDF Harald Ortmann, the managing director of the production company involved. Ortmann explained that three security guards were hired in advance for the shoot. This is now standard for filming demonstrations. Ortmann said they were seriously injured when they tried to help the sound assistant and the cameraman. https://www.watson.de/deutschland/berlin/107372326-angriff-auf-heute-show-team-staatsschutz-ermittelt-abdelkarim-aeussert-sich That is sad to read that hiring security teams is now a necessary "normal", but understandable. (I've been attacked myself at protests)
Mattias Larsen
Defenitely far right, not far left. Heute show have been mocking nazis (well anyone really, but they seem to have been the most aggressive about it in the past). Nazis are nazis, I am surprised it has not happened before. For some reason last years right wing attacks with deadly violence have been downplayed time after time here in Germany. I really hope for the best for these people. 4 out of 5 are seriously injured and beaing taken care at hospital as far as I know.
DanieldH
It becomes strange: Well current news quoting police/officials: Police attributing the attackers to the radical left scene. It is treated as a politically motivated crime. It appears to be a planned revenge for the media coverage (of whatever?).
Mattias Larsen
It does not makes sense to me, but I see those claims too. The Heute show were according to Tagesspiegel covering corona-hygiene skeptical demo in Mitte earlier in the day, which was headlined with known right wing names. The reporter is also earlier known for mocking Nazis by for example go to schools to read "Mein Kampf" just to ridicule how bad it actually is. Granted it was an unique situation this 1st May and there was probably not just "one" demo, but the autonomous left demo was planned to be located in Kreuzberg, not Mitte. On twitter the right wing seems to party and the left wishes them speedy recovery. Something feels off.
