Last April I started to have some balance problems. I just finished a movie and I had used an earbud for the radio and headphones over that for the mixer. I had become used to not hearing all the sound of the mixer in the left ear. Shortly after the movie went dark because of covid I had trouble talking on the phone with that ear. I had hurt them before with loud sounds and just figured it was the two way radio and the ears always recovered.

The balance continued to be a problem and has slowly become better. I made an appointment with the ear specialist three weeks ago and after many hearing tests said I had a total loss of the lower frequencies in my left ear.

I am surprised that I am not more upset, I am actually relieved to know what the problem has been. I don't think my mixing has suffered, I only provide a mono track with Iso's.

The ear doctor said my loss was probably due to a virus or bacteria attacking the hearing nerve. She had a very long winded name that I didn't remember or care to know about since the damage has already happened.

She said they know little about this and I wanted to know if any one else has dealt with this and knows how it happened.

Oh, I started using a small box called the ComBiner and that has really helped and keeps the two way from blasting.

I have found that there is a whole lot about my hearing that the ENTs don't understand at all as I've gotten older.  More mysteries than solid causes these days, and the whole system is different from day to day.  Fortunately you are probably experienced enough to know what is supposed to be there in the signal in your cans, so, no, your location dialog recording isn't probably affected much by your loss.  But I was told to take anomalies like this as warnings to be more-extra careful of your hearing going forward.  Maybe forego ear-stretching activities like very loud music, diving, and be careful on airplanes....

Sorry to hear about your situation. The combiner is great for when you’re forced into using a walkie. I always try to keep the walkies at absolute minimum volume needed to understand it. Of course people are all over the place on how they use walkies. Some always yell into it others whisper... wish their were more earphone choices with built in limiters.

last time I used a walkie was as a sound utility. I always kept it low enough to ignore most of the time but loud enough for my brain to pick up useful tidbits. Mostly I was using it to just monitor the production channel and didn’t have to actively use it like a PA or AD would.

I think the first time I responded to some sound related bit of business in the walkie the response from the AD was ‘holy shit what is sound doing on the walkies??’

Have youse guys ever tried the Temple Transducer com unit from Motorola? $90 bucks. They conduct sound through the bone just in front of your ears leaving both ears free for normal conversation or wearing headphones. I have been using them for years.

Which headphones do you use over these?

Is it comfortable, especially on long days?

Does it come with the PTT inline switch?

How well does it work/sound when listening to audio and and an incoming call comes through the comms?

Thanks

I use Sony 7506 headphones with muffs the same time I am using the temple transducers.

They work great for me. Through lunch break I am still wearing them forgetting I have them on. I wear both all day long. If they are too tight on your head just bend them a bit.

They have the standard PTT button north of the coily part of the cable.

When you first use them you will be freaked out that you can carry on a normal conversation with people around you, with both ears and then hear comms clearly at the same time.

I find them liberating while not interfering with my mixing headphones.

The wrap around the head bit rests at the lower part of your head so you can still wear hats. The transducers wrap around the top of your ears.

They are very lightweight.

Thanks for the info.

Last few questions:

Do you find them loud enough, especially in noisy environments? And with headphones on?

Is the twin Jack plug standard?

Does the Jack plug stay in the radio well? Or do you find it pops out easily? It looks like it doesn’t screw in like the other earpiece set ups.

Thanks again

No problem at all with the number of questions. We are here to help each other and leave rude comments about politicians, lol.

The signal from the transducers are more subsonic than sonic. They conduct sound waves/vibrations through your temporal bone. I never use them at full volume. With all the Motorola two-way radios I've used you can turn them up too loud to the point they vibrate on you temporal bone and tickle. I was told these where developed for constrution workes on loud construction sites. You will never use them at full volume.

The twin jack is a standard Motorola connector. They are made my Motorola. You will need an adapter to use them with Kenwood radios. Their pins are closer together.

The plug does not screw in but fits so tight it won't fall out. Mine never has.

Side benefit is you will never get feedback from keying your mic right next to someone else with a radio.

Thanks again for the info PMC. I’m liking this idea more and more. I think I’ll give it a try.

To the OP, sorry to hear about your hearing troubles. Hope you recover soon.

Thanks

I took my mother to the ENT yesterday, for dizziness and balance trouble. He prescribed a simple exercise for her... five reps, three times a day. From a seated position (on a bed or something) lean all the way over to one side, return to center and lean down to the other side. Each rep is supposed to last 30 seconds or so. It is supposed to help realign calcium crystals which have shed or something in the inner ear somewhere. This apparently happens as we age and diabetics are more susceptible to this shedding of crystals. He also prescribed low dose Valium for only a two week period to help with the dizziness/vertigo and make the exercise more possible for her.

At 88, her hearing is extremely good. She described her feeling as dizzy because she couldn't find a more descriptive word, saying she wasn't really dizzy. The ENT also removed large bits of ear wax which had impacted her eardrums.

Sorry this wasn't more specific. Hope it helps someone looking for a place to start looking for answers.

Of course, you can find nearly everything on-line.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease yesterday. Good thing it will only affect one ear. Another downside is Caffeine and salt aggravate it, I love coffee. There is no cure and no known cause. I tried a hearing aid and it did help with conversations. I am not confident it will help, if not hurt, my ability to mix when using multiple microphones. I just finished a movie this week and all went well. I was able to mix it as good as I ever could.

Oh good luck!

I recall some decent conversations about hearing-loss issues over on gs. Perhaps the like-minded people over there can share some experience and advice... https://www.gearslutz.com/board/search.php

But mostly, I hope everything works out for you!
