Mikro Addict
As a followup, to this excellent video, if I were to connect a wireless receiver, will I get optimal levels by adjusting the trim knob on the side? I do not really want to add another mixer to get mic level on those channels. Should I be setting line level in the receiver then? If so, which Lectrosonics receiver should I be using? I have old UCR and SRA receivers at my disposal.
Philip Perkins
You can adjust the line input gain of ch 3/4 in the menu, via the left side knob. It's not much of a way to ride gain, since each channel is in its own menu item, but it does work. You can also adjust levels on the output of the wireless receiver, but that is probably just as awkward. I still use a 744T all the time as a 4 channel recorder-mixer, and found it far easier to make a "pot box" with 2 Bournes volume potentiometers in a small bespoke box that I ran the outputs of the 2 wireless channels through. This was worked very well for me for well over a decade now.
sciproductions
I used to use my 744T with my Zaxcom QRX235 receiver, because I could control gain I was more than happy to just leave input 3 and 4 always at +5db gain.
Mikro Addict
Thanks for the advice which is greatly appreciated. I hope it is the same when working with a Lectrosonics SRA receiver too. I have set the gain in the receiver to zero dB, and the channel 3 & 4 recorder gain to +5dB, as you have suggested. Now, I If I am to connect a shotgun microphone like an MKH 416 running on external +48V phantom power, will the +5db setting will be adequate or would I need to increase it? You would still need to increase it. There just isn’t enough gain for those inputs.
