John Coffey
I think it's a good idea to have someone of Robert's Kennedy's caliber flying our flag out there as a brand of excellence. Robert is a special person who really knows our craft. We have a wonderful relationship and so we agreed that he will still be a part of Coffey Sound, between going out as a technician occasionally on day jobs, but continue working at Coffey Sound between his gigs. We still miss him when he's not here, so Robert has graciously found and trained his understudy at Coffey Sound. His name is Nick Hurtado. Nick already came with an excellent audio skill set and Robert has done a mind-meld with him. They are now interchangeable in their duties and abilities here at Coffey sound. Nick is just amazing too and I encourage you to try him out. I doubt you can ever stump him and as a product specialist, he is now second to none. Guest Ken Mantlo
I'm a little confused by your post John and had no idea that Robert Kennedy liked recording sound but I thought out of all the Kennedy brothers he was the real deal. It's too bad that he was cut down in his prime and I feel he could have done a lot of good, especially on civil rights. I didn't realize that Coffey Sound was open in the 60's. I'm envious that you know RFK, John. Good for you!
Richard Lightstone, CAS
Ken, Even if you are trying to be funny and your humor is questionable here. Your reply is tasteless and plain bad. RL

Jeff Wexler
I'm a little confused by your post John and had no idea that Robert Kennedy liked recording sound but I thought out of all the Kennedy brothers he was the real deal. I am sure Robert (at Coffey Sound) has heard all the Kennedy jokes. Your comment was thankfully not as tasteless as it could have been, still tasteless and uncalled for. Thank you, John Coffey, for your praise of Robert and the introduction to Nick Hurtado --- not a replacement for Robert but a worthy addition to the helpful people at Coffey Sound. old school
My guess is Ken was being irreverent, not mean or tasteless. Sometimes the written word hangs out there and..... any way I have talked to Nick on the phone and look forward to meeting him in person. Welcome. John Coffey
Kenny is a personal friend of ours and the nicest guy I ever met. This is just another case of keyboard words not coming out in the way it was intended. Geez, he was just ribbing us and by now realizes maybe it wasn't quite as funny as he wanted it to be. Swing and a miss, not everyone is John Steinbeck around here. I know I'm not. You'll confirm that after reading the next Coffey Sound Magazine. I write a lot of stuff that I think is funny, but misses the mark, but buddies are still buddies and he is ours. No big deal at all. As for Nick comparing to Robert, he's not meant to replace Robert because Robert plans to stick around for a long time and he still does fantastic work for us, and certainly there's an edge to Robert on sheer years experience in the trenches here. However, my praise for Nick is genuine. Robert discovered him himself and told me he's the real deal and that he could be his replacement someday. Boy was he right. Being not the brightest guy myself, I always make sure that I hire much smarter people than me. The lead Product Specialists at Coffey Sound can't fake it in this day and age. Nick knew a lot before coming here (from his prior employment at another audio rental company) and has already learned the functions of almost every piece of gear and it's applications here. They have to walk the talk. Nick had the audio background chops already but he takes it much further in understanding than most specialists I've ever hired. He has a photographic memory that helps a lot too. Robert is his personal mentor to fill in any gaps. Remember this post, because I stand behind my high praise of Nick. Test him out yourself. It won't be long before the rest of the industry is singing his praises too.
Guest Ken Mantlo
Well this sure took a turn for the worse. First off, I know Robert Kennedy (...and you're no Robert Kennedy!) and he's a good guy that I have nothing but praise for. In fact, I tried to hire him on numerous occasions but he kept running off to Vietnam. Secondly, I didn't mean to high-jack this thread introducing Nick Hutrado. If Robert says that Nick is good then that's good enough for me. Thirdly, You may question my sense of humor but to call this bit tasteless? Really? A simple joke about someone confusing Coffey Sound's Robert Kennedy with the real RFK as tasteless? Maybe not funny, but tasteless? You aren't the ones giving sound guys the image of being "sticks in the mud" on set are you? Fourthly, Thanks for sticking up for me John and Crew.
