Steve Joachim
While we did not tackle, video camera in hand, the UPS driver delivering the Tascam HS-P82 to our door. We do now offer a comprehensive, thoughtful, product review for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy. http://www.locationsound.com/proaudio/ls/lsc_review_tascam_hsp82.html SJ

Philip Perkins
Thanks for the nice review. John B. You rock, Mike. Thanks for doing the clock test (as an HDP2 user, my first question) as well as venturing an educated opinion on the unit's sound. Parker Dinkins
FWIW, a 133x Compact Flash card isn't fast enough for full track count, high sample rate record mode with the HS-P82. A Sandisk 90MB/s (600x) works fine, though. I haven't tried anything in between. Parker Dinkins
Marc Wielage
Kudos to Mike Paul. Well-written, with a good sense of humor, and a fair assessment of the pros and cons. My biggest concern would be the relative lack of analog outs. Between camera hops and Comteks and video village and all that stuff, I find I'm needing those more and more these days. On the other hand, with digital camera hops like the Zaxcom and the Lectro D4, maybe analog isn't such a big deal. Sobering comments on the HS-8 CF player for dailies. That's a drag about the file structure/data issue. Hopefully, they'll get that worked out so that it'll use CF cards from SD, Zaxcom, Cantar, Tascam, Nagra, and everybody else. --Marc W. Philip Perkins
I sure wish Tascam had put some more effort into the DR680, the "little brother" of the HSp82. It is a much more "baggable" size, and has MANY outputs. A few hundred dollars more to allow it to record BWFs and take ext TC in, like the HDP2...close but no cigar. RobertKennedy
I spoke with the Tascam engineers last week and they confirmed that the HS-8 (and HS-2) are being designed to read compact flash cards directly from all of the major recorders without the need to match any directory structure. We'll see if they come through with that promise, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Nice review, Mike! --Robert
