This is part of Sound Devices's announcement for IBC:

CL-1

The CL-1 Remote Control and Keyboard interface will be on hand. The CL-1 allows any 7-Series recorder to be controlled by a PC keyboard for quick and easy entry of scene/take information and for speedy menu navigation. The CL-1 also allows external devices to control its transport (record, start, stop) through switch closures.

Visitors to Sound Devices booth will be the first to preview the release candidate of the next revision of software for the 7-Series digital recorders. “2.0” brings a number of powerful, unique features to the 7-Series, including: simultaneous recording to internal drives and external FireWire storage mediums (with up to three destinations with the 722 and 744T), full recording and play back from any connected storage medium including attached FireWire drives, control of the CL-1 Remote Control and Keyboard Interface, iXML metadata, file and folder renaming, and several other unique features.

That is really great news!  With the addition of iXML and real firewire throughput speeds, a 7 series recorder would make a handy addition to any boom recorder/metacorder package.  One will now be able to use it for over the shoulder or insert car work and then just drag the sound files into your current metacorder folder, and the files will even show up on the sound report!

I must confess, I had felt that without file renaming capabilities, the 744 really wasn't useable as much more than a backup recorder.  You could re-name your files on your computer but the metadata would still have been wrong.
