Brian
Hey all, Just needed some advice. I have two ALP 700a purchased used from a mixing friend. just wondering what you guys have for a low cost mounting option. I have all my booms fitted with The ambient quick locks so having this incorporated would be the best for me. Is there anything out there pre made and sold by any of our favorite manufacturers? Idea? Thanks for the input. Brian
Guest BobD
This mount easily adjusts 10 different ways...and allows the antennas to simply swing to the middle so it can lie flat in a case...or in any direction sideways or up and down..Very light, and reasonably priced.... http://www.fullcompass.com/product/384555.html One stop shopping too... Manfretto 154B.... It's the sh-t!!!! LOVE it... Oh yeah, that's my flashing OT light in the middle, keeps planes from hitting it as well... Sorry the pic was a crop from a much wider pic... Brian
Just looking for suggestions, not a speech from my mom in grade 2. I am being sarcastic for a reason. Serious replies only please. Just looking for pointers. B
studiomprd
I am being serious... pointers: high clear (especially from metal) separated short and/or lo-loss coax (or perhaps preamps are needed?) " for a low cost mounting option. " in addition to equipment from movie-places, there is lots of stuff available at your favorite "hardware store" that you can use to outfit your rig... the antenna are designed for lots of very flexible mounting options, your individual situation, and work style, including cart specifics, and your own preferences " I have all my booms fitted with The ambient quick locks so having this incorporated would be the best for me " mean it really is up to you... ponder the possibilities! RPSharman
Brian, After working with, seeing, and using many antenna rigs, I have found this to be the best and least expensive option for me. The antennas are mounted to the last section of a loc-lite Flex Arm (which is an easy self-build). That is, in turn, mounted to the metal bar using the available loc-line mounting section. The metal bar is a support bar for an American Combo Stand with and extra hole drilled in the middle for the baby-pin mounting and pin combo. All the bits were bought from American Grip in Los Angeles (SF Valley). I love being able to easily remote the antennas to a C-Stand, of can even pull one off and mount it to a Flex Arm and clip it somewhere. The above Manfrotto option is similar and very cool too. Guest BobD
Brian, I put the name and link in my original post below.... Good luck... Get some skin, they mean well...
Brian
Yes I know Bob that he means well but it's not informational. If you read you can see that I asked for specific information. That's all. I appreciate the advice though. rpsharman: love it!! really nice. I was thinking of something like this in my brain!! Thanks for the pics everyone. Gonna talk to my local shop here in T.O and will let you know what I have come up with.
David Waelder
I like the rigs used by BobD and Robert Sharman. Both look simple, clean, elegant and reasonably economical. David
Jeff Wexler
I built a simple and inexpensive antenna bar out of right angle aluminum stock and 2 baby-pin spuds. The bar now holds 2 log-periodic antennas and 1 2.4 ghz directional antenna for the Zaxcom IFB. - Jeff Wexler
RPSharman
As you can see in my picture, a center pin which soon might host a 2.4G antenna, like Jeff's. Otherwise it's where I put a receiving antenna for video for when I'm lucky enough to be on a show which broadcasts. Those were the days. Philip Perkins
Most of us have made small "bar" rigs for the fins in which they can fold or turn inward so the whole thing can be stored flat. Aluminum bar stock seems like the best idea, since it is light and sooner or later you'll need to hoist this thing WAY up in the air to clear a grip/electric wall o' steel.... soundtrane
I use a long strip piece of acrylic with holes in the sides and center, and use big plastic hexagonal knobs with 3/8 nuts inside them to fix the two PSC sharkfins or the Lectro SNA antennas. the bar itself goes into a 38 bolt (like a boom pole top) and is held in place with another plastic knob. It's easy to erect and dismantle, takes just a minute... The sharkfins go flat into my Pelican case with the knobs in place. -vin
Brian
Thanks everyone for there input, lot's of valuable info. I ended up ordering this: http://www.k-m.de/en/products/category/additional-tracks-2/mode/productview/product/23600-300-55/new/0/pointer/1/?no_cache=1&hidesndlevel=0&tx_hacatalogue_pi1[searchfor]=bar Hope the link works. Everything I have to mount is 3/8. This bar has 4 positions, plus the centre hole is also 3/8 which will fit the male end of a ambient quick release just fine. My lectro ALP 700a is also 3/8. This is exactly what I was looking for. No building or making stuff (Im not really good at that). Just screw it in and go! Thanks. I will be posting finished pictures of the Sound Cart Next week. Thanks again. B
Jan McL
Really enjoyed this thread. Would love to see more antenna mast solution pictures Will post mine in due course unless there's another thread that would be more appropriate. Vin, I would love to have a picture of what you describe... I too went with the microphone bar, but smaller, mounted to the top of a light weight, light stand "riser" with a cardellini clamp. The "riser" fastens to a 5/8" spud at the bottom, and is cable-tied to the side of the cart in a few places. For the other side, used a heavy-duty grip gooseneck affair that may be easily bent down for sleep. This rig needs finesse. I use WindTek quick releases in the chain for flyouts, the extra males mounted to various 5/8 spud adapter/spring clamps. Bingo. Jeff, how are you liking that 2.4Ghz antenna? Mine's a lot bigger and would LOVE to scale it down... All the best, Jan
Jeff Wexler
Jeff, how are you liking that 2.4Ghz antenna? Mine's a lot bigger and would LOVE to scale it down... Jan I haven't really had a chance to use it on a job yet. Seems to perform well in my limited testing. It specs out as a 10 dbi antenna and is of the corner-directional (not ultra directional) variety with reasonable horizontal and vertical dispersion pattern. I'll have to wait to see if it really works properly on the job. It is considerably smaller than some of the others in use out there but I'm hoping it will perform "big" like the others. - Jeff Wexler
John Blankenship
Lowe's Hardware carries a ready-made (almost) antenna bar that I use: http://tinyurl.com/32x89u4 It's designed for a paint roller. I simply drilled out the studs on each side and mount the antennas with wingnuts and rubber washers. When extended, the antennas are 20 inches apart. When collapsed, the bar is 12 inches across and fits nicely in one of my cases. I mount it on a lightweight fiberglass painter's pole which takes the antennas up to eight feet or higher. It's inexpensive, and does the job well. John B.
johnpaul215
I have an antenna bar setup, though lately I have been trying something different. I didn't think the antenna bar was giving me the recommended spread to see a big difference between the two antennas. I have been flying one shark fin on one of those cheap Rode 10foot boom poles (it's mounted on my cart). The second antenna is clipped somewhere by using a PSC flexi-mount, or some other type of clamp. I also keep a baby spud that I can screw in to the antenna to use some grip hardware for mounting. You can usually find someplace to mount it. So far it's been working well.
Jan McL
http://qik.com/video/385FF3390D9E4F29808FE1226F49613D Link above to the video of the antenna arrays. I've two -- because I can -- for separation. Want to finesse the entire arrangement for sure. I think selling the Audio Ltd. Quad and Fostex PD-6/EX-12 will do a lot for condensing & cleaning up. Oy. Fun. - Jan
Kevin Sorensen
This what I use. I found an inexpencive fishpole on e-bay, so that the bat wing can be raised fairly high. The dia-pole is on a flex arm w/clamp. Kevin
bigmaho
I use the same mount. It's great. I highly recommend it! I have two Zaxcom shark fins, a 2.4 gig high gain AND a 2.4 gig power amp all mounted on it. Billy
Richard Lightstone, CAS
OK, I'll jump in. I have the original Remote Audio Antenna Bar on a K-Tek pole that can get my SNA-600's, and or the PWS HA-8089 Hellical and the Remote Audio Comtek 216mHz whips up over 15 feet. bperlman
Hey Richard, how do you like your PWS helical antenna. I remember they were discussed a while back and Dan Izen and others swore by them. I know they are a bit pricey, but worth it? Bruce
Richard Lightstone, CAS
Bruce, The PWS is about $440. not as expensive as the Sennheiser A5000CP which lists for $960. I have used it in long walk and talk situations or where I need more range and reception has been excellent. I have yet to use it in a car to car wireless situation, but Paul Ledford used that setup with two of them and I believe Lee Orloff did the same on "Knight & Day" for the many car chase scenes. It's just another "tool" in the 'ol toolbox. RL
