JackHenry
http://www.sounddevices.com/products/usbpre2.htm Sorry about the double post, but thought it was probably more appropriate in here.
Tom Visser
"class compliant" drivers, wonder if it will work with the iPad. It most certainly would need a power source, though. Looks like a really well thought out device. Resisting... urge... to... buy... how much $$$?
RadoStefanov
Copy from the other post you started: They should have implemented 552s topology with the SD recording. Also the XLR outputs on the bottom makes it harder for bag use. No power input. Other then that looks ok. Not the mixpre replacement I wished for. JackHenry
Also the XLR outputs on the bottom makes it harder for bag use. No power input. S/PDIF In/Out & Aux In/Out on the end Has USB powering option, so it just needs a power cable with a USB plug. It can work in stand alone mode as long as it has power going into the USB socket
John Steigerwald
Not the mixpre replacement I wished for. It's not a MixPre replacement, totally different function. The USBPre is a high quality stereo A/D-D/A converter for a computer.
JackHenry
It's not a MixPre replacement, totally different function. The USBPre is a high quality stereo A/D-D/A converter for a computer. From reading the PDF spec sheet, as long as you can power it (via USB) it functions as a stand alone pre-amp. With line in/out via S/PDIF or XLR, it is a good replacement for the mix pre.
Damien Looney
The XLR outputs are a really nice addition. Handy for back-up recording. Nice unit!
Nic Stage
From reading the PDF spec sheet, as long as you can power it (via USB) it functions as a stand alone pre-amp. With line in/out via S/PDIF or XLR, it is a good replacement for the mix pre. This is correct. It get's all the power it needs from a standard USB jack that can supply 5V at up to 500 mA. RadoStefanov
Could you point me to a good source for hirose to usb cable DIY? This is correct. soundtrane
Rado, you will also have to reduce your 12/14.4V DC to 5 V. There was another thread on this recently... Last year, i rigged a 12V XLR to USB connector cable. was not difficult. Want me to make it for you and send it from India? -vin
Tom Visser
You best bet is to use a DC to DC regulator that will isolate your 12VDC (presumably high current) source with your 5VDC output, likely rated for 500mA max, maybe 1A if you want to chain a few devices or support future USB3 power requirements. The USB Pre 2 claims a max current draw of 100mA. If there is enough interest, I could even build a few 10x AA battery packs (15VDC alkaline or 12VDC NiMH/NiCd) with a regulated 5V USB port. (Digikey wants me to purchase the battery holders in quantities of 100) I stand corrected, 500mA during operation.

Anecdotally: A few days ago I had a 788T powered with a bench supply to test the operation of the USBPre 2 in stand-alone mode while attached to the 788T's keyboard USB jack. With 2 phantom powered mics attached (One a current-hungry Earthworks M30), inputs gains cranked, headphone gain cranked (With headphones attached), the 788T was showing about 200mA~300mA increase in current draw (With 12V from the bench supply). JackHenry
Another great product Nic. Now if only you'd fix my SD702 M/S on Output issue, along with Usable markers and Output active on playback only I'd be a very happy camper
JackHenry
Also Nic, does this have M/S capability? Or linking L/R?
stacysound
Not to hijack the thread, but what program would I use on my Mac to record 2 channels of audio from this? I would need timecode. Like to use as a backup for my Deva in cart mode.

RadoStefanov
ah cool thanks I was just wondering ... Why does the usbpre2 has better converters then 552???
studiomprd
" Why does the usbpre2 has better converters then 552 " maybe because it is primarily a converter, and the other unit is primarily a mixer...
Matt Mayer
Also Nic, does this have M/S capability? Or linking L/R? There is no M/S or L/R linking in the USBPre2
RadoStefanov
The price difference would be a few $ I do not want to use the 522 for recording because the converters are poor compered to almost every Audio Equipment out there. $2900 for a mixer and they could not fit physically or within there budget the converters from USBpre2? Major downside. And like John says : there are other devices that have the functions needed. I just think it sucks. Also people have to buy ZAXCOM or SONOSAX if they want more then 0db maximum before clipping. Never understood this low spec. studiomprd
" I do not want to use the 522 for recording because... " then don't. The recording features (including converting A to D) are a terrific bonus, and make an excellent backup to a 2 channel hop, or a transcription copy. The 552, without the digital recording capability would still be a terrific value ...
