WiMAX 4G Internet access, now in LAX, and nationwide!!

Recommended Posts

warning: a plug from an enthusiastic user!

I have been using WiMAX Internet while in LAS for over a year.  First there was Cricket, and then came Clear.  In LAS they seem to be fighting it out in every strip mall cell phone store, and on the sides of every bus and/or taxi.

What is it? It is WiFi on steroids, basically using the 4G (and 3G) cell phone networks for Internet access.  Similar tp what is also available on cards from the Cell Phone companies --for a higher price and , with data limits, like "included minutes" on a cell phone, and excess charges.  Cricket and Clear offer unlimited use, 24/7, for a flat fee, and the speed is excellent.

Until recently there were roaming charges, and the service was not available in LAX. Clear is now in there nationwide roll-out and pre-launch with the service, and they have some new tricks, too.  The original device(s) were USB dongles to plug in to any computer, and I used it with several laptops and even a couple tower computers without modem/NIC cards.  it is the device that is enabled by subscription, so you can plug it into various computers as you desire... It also used to require running a little helper program to connect.

The new devices available include a mini-hotspot (they call it a Clear-spot) which is a WiFi port that can talk to up to 5 WiFi devices (like your computers)  at once. Your computers, etc, will discover it, and connect. It also can connect to one device (computer) via USB2. the ClearSpot is just a little bigger than our favorite wireless TX's!  The more basic USB dongle is also available.

There are no roaming charges nationwide (including Hawai'i), service is nationwide on their growing 4G network, or when 4G is not detected Sprint's 3G network.  LAX is pretty well covered by 4G.  Flat monthly charge is $55, but the pre-launch special is $20 off for 3 months, free activation, free device with AC adapter (it actually contains a rechargeable battery, or takes power from a USB port) and there is an additional car charger included, too. The Internet works great in vehicles, but of course Texting and Cell Phone calls without hands-free are against the law (like Block 28!) and surfing the Internet while operating a vehicle is probably not a good idea, but PAX could!!

In addition, you get 2 free email addresses,(xxx@clear.net) so this might replace other ISP options for some folks.  What I think is terrific is that we can collect a fee for 'rental', and provide this high speed ' WiFi hotspot' to production on some projects!!

here comes the plug:

I signed up with Stephanie Tirado at 866-452-8238. In setting up my account, she and her boss, Justin Mihich were spectacular.  I had an issue setting up my email program (outlook Express, if you must know) and Justin actually called Tech Support, we got through quickly, and found my oversight in the pretty thorough set-up instructions. I was impressed with his service/satisfaction attitude.

and, yes, please mention that the Senator sent you!

I never actually measure internet speeds, but in LAS (for over a year) I've been able to surf , download, and play streaming audio and video without problems. (I've never had a problem with video, but I don't stream video very often!)  I'm connected to 4 G and getting great performance in LAX.

are you on 4G ??

Wow.

The senator's CELL PHONE INTERNET lets him play video.

Why don't you get cable. 40mgbs per second and loving it.

If you live out of your car I can justify the use of CLEAR. Otherwise cable rules.

Clears coverage is not very good and not available everywhere.

Get an HTC EVO and use its internet .

Just did that for a Palestinian friend of mine.

He had the SPRINT USB 4g device and was paying extra 50 bucks.

Hacked the phone for him. When comparing both connections the EVO speed was noticeably better.

cable at the office (rr)...

and with my 4G connection, I have fast Internet on sets, on locations, radio remotes, in hotels, etc. on the road, and as noted, I can now even provide the production 4 WiFi connections (#5 is me!) as well... for a modest cost.

I am just saying if you already have internet plan on your phone you  can share it wireless with as many as 11 people. You need an HTC phone for that.

And at least in LV this is a way faster option then Cricket and Clear.

Clear shows a huge coverage in LV but many neighborhoods just does not work.

Even some Clear sales man advise against use in certain places.

Sprint works in places in the casinos where nothing else  but Verizon works
