Mojogolaso Posted November 19 Report Share Posted November 19 A newbie question, but the Lectro documentation on "phantom power" from their UM400a transmitter is confusing to me. Seems sometimes you can connect powered mics directly using the MC41 cable, but other times you need an in-line 48V phantom power box. I'm hoping to rig the the UM400a with an MC41 cable to a 416 mic to make a wireless boom for some shots. noises1 Posted November 19 Report Share Posted November 19 Do you have an MKH416T or MKH416P? A UM400a has only +5volts available on the input connector, and this +5v is much too low to power a MKH416T or MKH416P. A MKH416T requires +12 volts (in T / Tonader wiring format), and a MKH416P requires +48volts (Phantom wiring format). Ambient make the UMP - its small, light weight, and can power both T & Ph mics. The MC41 cable is only for those mics which don't need phantom power, such as a NTG2 or ME66 with the K6 powering capsule. But any pro level mic is going to need phantom power. Before I upgraded this year to using Sony DWX digital wireless for my booms, then I was using the UM400 transmitters paired with one of my two Sound Devices MM1 preamps. (for this, you'll need the Lectrosonics MC35: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/348320-REG/Lectrosonics_MC35_XLR_Female_to_TA5_Female_Line.html Or similar, or make it yourself) Or use a UH400 , HM , or HMa transmitter from Lectrosonics.
