soundtrane
Hi, The thought has often occurred to me - would it be possible to set up a mobile edit suite? As far as the equipment goes, it is easy to set up a pro tools rig in a rack mount case. Monitors and stands (5.1 surround monitoring) could also be made travel friendly. What about acoustics? Given a decent hotel room, with control over HVAC etc, quiet space, is it feasible to carry a set of damping pads, bass traps etc., and do a check on the room (pink noise, etc) and set up some acoustic treatment in such a space? Just a thought... (considering some of the "studios" that people have nowadays where they are doing film post work... heh...) -vin
studiomprd
it is done all the time... the rigs are readily rentable, especially PT... I like the JBL LSRP speakers with the built in pink noise + EQ system
Philip Perkins
The answer to your question is that the sound equipment part of a post suite is the easy part. The monitoring environment will be much harder to control, and will cause you trouble in proportion to how finished the work you are trying to do there is. This is exactly what separates picture edit suites from sound rooms--how much effort has been put into the sound of the room. phil p
soundtrane
Phil, No absolutes, but setting up tracks, a basic premix with spatial info, etc. Eventually these sessions will be carted to the mix stage where the real stuff will be done... Yes - the gear is easy. It is the room treatment that i was thinking of when i wrote this post... -vin
bleueblancrouge
why bother with room treatment? lugging all the equipment around. blah. as a sound sup/editor, these days all you'll need is PT9, a laptop and a pair of headphones. you can dialogue edit and lay out all your tracks without a peep being heard from your room. if it's going anyway to the mix room then let them spatialize the mix. but then again, you're not totally clear on what you want to do editing wise. basic cleaning and arranging of tracks, dialogue edit or the whole enchilada (dial edit; full sound effects edit with backgrounds and hard effects; music edit, all ready for final mix) i trust this is for television, right?
