Voice cloning on "Emilia Perez" by Jacques Audiard

Recommended Posts

Hi, here is the interview of Cyril Holtz, one of our most talented re-recording mixer in France, who has worked for more than 2 years as sound supervisor on the film "Emilia Perez" a musical drama by Jacques Audiard that just received awards in Cannes 2024 for best actresses and Jury price.

He speaks notably on the development and use of a "voice cloning" tool (of course powered by AI) for one of the actress Karla Sofía GASCÓN, as the music written for her part to sing was out of her voice range.

He explains that they had a company develop this tool for 2 years prior shooting (as the songs are filmed in playback mode). The work was a very collaborative work including quite a lot of people so nobody lost a job on this.

They use as the source voice the voice of Camille, a french female singer and musician who wrote the score for the film, and the target voice of course was the voice of the actress who also plays a man before his transition to a woman's body.

To make it short the cloned voice was used in the way ADR is used, bits by bits on occasions. Sometimes just for one or two words/notes, and edited with direct sound, ADR and overdub singing by the actress.

The video is in french but the YT translation subtitles in English are not so bad. The talk about the voice cloning starts around 24 minutes.
