The toxicity of Facebook sound groups

Recommended Posts

My first experience with social media with production sound was this forum right here on JWSOUNDGROUP.  It was and still is filled with professionals that give helpful advice and I genuinely enjoy being here!.  I recently purchased a Scorpio and decided to ask a question on a Facebook sound group on which bag do you prefer?  The first two replies were snarky so I deleted the post and removed myself from the group.  I've got zero tolerance for toxicity these days and this is not my first time having a negative experience on a Facebook sound group.  So lesson learned,  I'm going to repost it here where I can share and receive helpful info from folks who are real professionals that have valuable contributions to make!

Ya, there are so many Facebook groups that aren't worth the time for various reasons. Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but feels like things are worse now than a couple years ago... I mean for the fairly anodyne groups I belong to. But if you want to wade back into the FB sound world, there are two, and perhaps two.five groups that I think are decent. And I'll guess you already know about these. But what the heck:

JWSOUND on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/249253102906

Jeff created it. Lots of the people here post there. As you might expect. 🙂

Freelance Sound Mixers & Recordists for TV/Film: https://www.facebook.com/groups/soundmixers/

Charlie Tomaras created it, IIRC. Also lots of crossover with people here.

Sound Devices "official" public group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sounddevices

Run and moderated by SD staffers (mostly). Seems pretty good at staying on topic. But a big group and I don't closely follow it.

Though like you, I find this place most helpful and mostly friendly(ish). Feels like more of a community.

I guess that means it's about time for me donate again. 🙂

I replied to your other post, but I totally agree with this one.  I find FB to be mostly toxic and prone to divisive rhetoric and dialogues.  I deleted mine 8 years ago and never looked back.  JWsound is the way for sure.

To put a fine point on it, THIS!

This Is why I have never used insta-twit, FU-book, Twatter or XikXok.

Any platform can turn into a toxic environment from abusive members but THESE platforms attract them and act as a very efficient amplifier. Though with a very low signal to noise ration and gobs of THD.

Remember, YOU are the product on these platforms. Besides getting potentially sketchy advice you are giving yourself up to be data mined by nefarious actors.

I celebrate dedicated boards like jwsoundgroup.

Just saying.

Rant over.

Yeah, I will say Facebook can be more visually interesting to browse with more pictures of gear and setups (seems most people feel an image or video is a minimum requirement for a Facebook post) but the discussion often goes off the rails. I deleted my Facebook account last year and have been pretty happy with that choice. I also hated how stuff would just sort of disappear or become really difficult and convoluted to find again. At least things are logically sorted and presented chronologically here and searchable. Also there’s a lot of nasty rate-shaming on Facebook that seems very misguided.

Kind of scary how often, for months after I deleted my account, I would without thinking open safari on my phone and type “F” into the search bar. This stuff is definitely addictive.

I still scroll through JWsound probably too much but at least that is usually a quick check and I read one or two posts and then I’m back to real life and it doesn’t go off the rails into some algorithmic hell spiral where suddenly I’m purchasing shit I don’t need or getting criticized by someone I’ll never meet.

TikTok… I can’t even start. For me it’s totally disorienting, impossible to use and it really just seems to want me watching girls in yoga outfits and guys doing stupid pranks. Usually to girls in yoga outfits .

Derek H,

Blahahaha. Funny last paragraph to your post.

I think you have to be a preteen to understand XikXok or get any mis-percieved value out of it. What a time waster, in my opinion. And I certainly don't understand "influencers." I am definitely not their target audience. Ever.

It's terrible...I called out a well known Montreal soundie for making highly sexualized comments to actresses while putting lavs on them.  I was rewarded with physical threats from him on FB, so bad and specific to where I lived that I needed to file a police report.  Oof.  It's toxic out there...

I feel sorry for newbies who are asking genuine questions via FB, since they open themselves up to torrents of abuse from disaffected and unhappy users looking for a way to vent.  There are a lot of people who use FB (etc) as a kind of scream therapy I guess.  Trying to make yourself feel better by putting someone down for not knowing as much as you is an addictive fool's game.   I hope those newbs find their way to moderated forums like this one or Gearspace.

I am feeling lucky to have born in era without Facebook or any social media, not even internet was known to me. And I am feeling double lucky when internet - social media was not like this as today; where everyone was kind to each other. That's why I am really appreciate the JW Sound Group. When I was started, was extreme source of knowledge and I am really appreciate that the same people is still here. And the best part is that somehow we developed production sound techniques via sharing experience - knowledge - try & error and from the other hand, we, somehow pushed companies to develop new tools and technologies.

Agree… I find with FB there’s a few really loud voices filling the space.

I would love to delete FB but it feels that it’s a decent resource for sound, and I might be out of the loop if I got rid of it. Perhaps my career would go on its course just fine without it, but it seems most of the manufacturers spread their info on there now and respond to questions in almost real time which is valuable.

Going to have to keep it I think - jwsound is great though. Sound mixers who have mentored me when I was starting out instilled a pay it forward mentality that I continue on with newer mixers today… I find jwsound embodies that ethos well, Facebook not as much.
