Scorpio Bag, What's your preference?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I don’t know anything about it, but I watched answer from the internet:

What production bags fit my mixer-recorder?

K-Tek, PortaBrace, Orca, and others all make bags for the 8-Series. The perfect bag for you depends on your set-up. Please contact bag manufacturers for suggested models!

Hopefully someone have experiences with it!

I like a tight bag, the smallest one I can get.

I've been using an Orca OR-32, first with a 688/SL6 and now with a Scorpio/SL2. It has served me well for the past six or so years. The OR-332 looks interesting but is far too large for me.

Cheers,

Tim

Presumably anybody buying a Scorpio has extensive experience with using other recorders in the past, such as 633/664/whatever, or even if it is just a Zoom F8 or MixPre6

What did you dislike / love about your bags in the past? Use that to base your decisions on what Scorpio bag to get.

As bags are a very personal decision, some people want to maximize space, others want the smallest possible. Some people want rigidness for security, other people want lightweight floppy bags. Some want lots of features, others want it minimalistic. There isn't really a "right" or "wrong" here, it's all matters of very personal preferences. Even for myself I find myself changing from job to job or from year to year what my own preferences are.

I have used a lot of the brands & styles including Porta Brace, Petrol, Orca and have have ordered custom ones from Protogear.  My Scorpio will be primarily a bag recorder to start and be for mostly car work & hard to reach bag only locations since I’m married to the Cantar ecosystem.  I think the key for me is flexibility.  The Stringray XL looks interesting, but the roominess of the large Sachtler ( formerly PS617 ) is also appealing as I like to be more modular than a fixed build since I don’t typically harness a bag and need things super tight.  I find sometimes rigid frames can get in the way for travel and certain types of build outs.  Anyway that’s my two cents, I’ll probably end up with multiple bags for it depending on how I integrate it into my sound package since new gear always seems to evolve in its own way in my system.

Hi. I have the 888 and was seduced by the compactness and features of the K-Tek Stingray Small X. (many pockets and support for antennas). For the Scorpio of course you would need the Large version. Now I do not know how does the Scorpio+SL2 fits in the large version, but I am nowadays a bit annoyed by the shape of the internal rigid frame of mine. It is not a "right angles box" but has a smaller opening at the top than the size of the bottom. That ends up limiting the way you can set your gear inside and it is becoming frustrating. It is too big for the 888+SL2 alone as it is not held enough at the bottom, but it is too small to fit extra gear like ID-TF8 rotary extension without damaging the SMA cables for the antennas of the SL2.

I might start looking for another one.

Following then 😉

I sold my Scoprio a while back, but without question the bag I liked most was the Rack n Bag from Film Devices:

HI Jesse. I have a couple of question: How was the weight over the shoulder/harness of the whole thing on the field?

Also How quick does it take to put the outer shell back on (is it acceptable when you need to move from cart to over the shoulder)?

Thanks in advance

I was in the same position recently and would have gone with the k-tek but found the large SAMAS bag to be the most minimalist and also half the price.

The K-tek is $1000aud in Australia...
I removed all the extra sections so it's also fairly light considering. It is a little tight on the sides, I needed an adaptor for the wifi antenna and the zips are way too noisy/need to be taped but overall I'm pretty happy with it.

Interesting, thank you Jack, I had never heard of them and they are Italian (my neightboor!).

The mixer bags MCX seem a bit tight for recorder+SL2 isn'it? I would love to see some photos of it with some real gear inside. Too bad they do not provide such photos unfortunately, nor mention compatibilities.
