Have been used a lot of times between Rycote and Cinela as Boom Op.; I would say Cinela hands down. Cinela Pianissimo for exteriors and Cinela Osix is my favourite when PSM (Production Sound Mixers) provide to me. I have not seen - used Radius so far.

I don't have wind situation that would make a full blimp necessary since I use the 50 only indoors. There I mostly use a modified COSI-HLD-MKH50 in a Cosi-L with fur. The mod allows the mic to go deeper into the cage. It is therefore size, not wind optimised, but is still more effective than some Osix with a furred Leo.

The Cosi is the most handling noise effective mic mount I know of.

What is your use case for a supercardioid in (outdoor?) wind?

I am just starting in location sound. I only have the mkh50 as my boom mic indoors and outdoors.

IMHO the Pianissimo is the best you can currently buy for mics of that size in general outdoor wind/rain situations. It may not be the best for the buck, if you're on a budget and it may also not be the most durable.

So you use your COSI-HLD and COSI-L with fur indoors?

I use the modded HLD-MKH50 indoors (and HLD-CMIT and the 8060-MZF/MZL thing outdoors).

All in the same Cosi L.

I might get a fabric Cosi L with the Radius fur in the future.

I hate the term "dead cat."  I call it a beaver or a windjammer.  The Piano's almost look like a raccoon.

Many years ago, students at a BIG10 football game referred to mine as a 'possum on a stick.

I think this predated Dead Cat.

Cheers,

Tim

In England, this was a 'Dhugal'

How so?

Robust, very light, extremely ergonomic, magnetic clasps, modular, extendable, innovative shock mounts, great price. Checkout the Mini-ALTO 210 to be released soon.

I also have a couple of Rycote short blimps for sale with new MKH  or other lyres.

Unless the whole blimp is suspended like cinelas I am not interested. Also cinela has got everything perfect. No need to reinvent the wheel.

The Cyclone's blimp is suspended, yet it features more rumbling than Pia and Piani.

It may be due to the invision style lyres.

I can not rule out that some day, someone comes up with a non suspended blimp, that does not resonate rumbling around the otherwise suspended mic, i.e. something like the DPA Wind Pac. At least, this did not happen with the Nano Shield, though otherwise advertised, even after the upgrade.

I can't even rule out that this Radius blimp will be such a thing, but I agree with Rado's scepticism. The preliminary photos from Radius do suggest it will perform like all the other fixed blimp products out there in terms of handling noise.

That said, even Cinela products can be improoved, modded and surpassed. If competition brings more innovation, thats more than reinventing the wheel.
