Hi,

I struggle to find much online about the DPA 2017 and I'd be interested to hear experience from people that have used it.

Also, how it performs in comparison to other shotgun mics like the Schoeps MiniCMIT or the DPA 4017. Or if you have any audio samples.

Thank you

I started a thread on the 2017 already when it first came out so you might look for that here on JWsound. Since then I’ve bought one but haven’t used it much. I can say that I thought it compared well with the CMIT  sound wise and I think it’s definitely at the quality level we expect. I think the choice comes down to how does it handle on a boom. The CMIT is very easy to que and make sound right on most people or a group of people and my initial impression with the 2017 is that it will be a little trickier but I haven’t spent enough time with it yet to say for sure.

I’d say if you have the money for a CMIT you can’t go wrong there but if you’re on a budget or just want to try something new the 2017 is a strong choice.

Hey Derek, thank you.

I looked for your older thread on the DPA 2017, but I couldn't find many reviews of testing the mic on the field...

If you have the time to use the 2017 more in the future, it would be great to hear your thoughts and experience with this mic at some point.

Would you say that the CMIT has a better "reach", in the sense that it would sound better when positioned not so close to the source?

I use a MiniCMIT as my main Boom, with a DPA 2017 as alternate/back-up for when the filming conditions might be more 'dangerous' - to avoid placing the Schoeps in higher risk (rain scenes, boat work, etc)

The DPA sounds great, but I do feel like I can hear the difference = MiniCMIT sounds like my ears are where the mic is, the DPA sounds a bit more like a 'microphone'.

having said that - it's really close, off axis sounds more natural than other shotguns, and I don't think there's enough of a difference that it would affect the final product.

How do you find the reach of the 2017?  I’m finding myself in alot of indoor “talking head” interview situations where the producer wants a lot of headroom above the talent.  I’m wondering if the 2017 would be good in this application - or at least better than a 416.

Here is an easy link to it for anybody reading this thread and curious to follow up with more info: https://jwsoundgroup.net/index.php?/topic/59968-dpa-2017-new-shotgun-mic-for-2023/

My guess is that it would sound more natural (better) than a 416, perhaps at the expense of being more "isolated"

it's a great mic though, and definitely worth a rental to test out

that would be a definite yes. In fact, the 2017 will sound better than the 416 in every situation.
