pscottm Posted December 20, 2024 Report Posted December 20, 2024 I have an 8 channel SX-S mixer I may be selling soon. It was serviced by Trew Audio in Nashville a couple years ago and sounds excellent.. I've used it mainly for music recording (utilizing the direct outs per channel) along with an SPL monitor controller which makes a great combo. Lately though my minimal setup has been based on the newer sonosax gear which I also own (R4+, M2D2, AD8+). The newer Sonosax gear I have is a bit more compact and doesn't require a separate recorder or A/D interface + laptop, but also does not have EQ's or sweepable analog HP filters which on the SX-S are quite good. I'd say if you are planning to use an SX-S for music recording, a good monitor controller would also be very useful for listening through speakers while sending the program outputs of the mixer to a stereo recorder or back to your DAW. In the photo (attached) you'll see a not-so-minimal setup where I was using vintage Quad Eight preamps for recording and monitoring/mixing through the SX-S which also works very well.

The Amek BCM-something is pretty nice but hard to find and the channel strips are densely populated like manhattan. Hard to service. Does it have to be an analog mixer? The Yamaha DM3-D appears to be getting popular with some location sound people who want a smaller format console that's also DC powered.
